New Smoke Detector Law Goes Into Effect In New York State

A new law in New York aims to make smoke detectors last a little longer and that’s to help you.

Starting April 1, new or replacement smoke detectors must have a sealed 10-year battery or be hard-wired to your home.

“It’s tamperproof. If you take the face off and you look at it, there’s no way you can get into it unless you break it. And if you want to break it, then right there tells you you’re not doing something that’s right,” St. Louis said.

All homes, apartments and buildings are required to have smoke detectors.

“Legally in the state of New York it is required that when you sell your home, you are supposed to have a smoke detector inside,” said Lindsay Boulerice of the Z Group.
