The NYPD will begin cracking down on speeding drivers using new speed cameras on Thursday as part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plan to prevent pedestrian deaths.
The cameras had previously been used to send warnings, now they’ll issue tickets.
The 10-year, ‘Vision Zero’ plan will reduce traffic deaths, announced de Blasio on Wednesday at a news conference in Woodside, Queens, near the intersection where an eight-year-old boy was killed walking to school last month.
Just a few weeks into 2014 and already 11 people have been killed in traffic accidents in New York City, added de Blasio.
Seven of those killed were pedestrians.

Perhaps it will save lives. But it will surely fill the city’s coffers. Will that money be used to improve roads?
There must be a two part approach drivers and WALKERS. What about distracted walkers. And walkers who cross against the light. Just today I had not one not two but three times people tried to cross as I was coming through the intersection with a clear green light. Making it mandatory to wear a reflective belt would also help save lives.
