The Biden administration’s new ambassador to Israel, Thomas Nides, visited the Kosel in Yerushalayim during Chanukah, giving a nod to U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the site.

He is only the second U.S. ambassador to Israel to visit the Kosel, following his predecessor, David Friedman, in 2017.

Until then, U.S. officials did not move across the pre-1967 lines, including the Old City of Yerushalayim. Dan Shapiro, Obama’s ambassador to Israel, did not make an official visit to the Kosel.
