New York City Bans Mention Of Dinosaurs, Dancing, Birthdays And More On Student Tests

testIn a bizarre case of political correctness run wild, New York educrats banned references to “dinosaurs,” “birthdays,” “Halloween” and dozens of other topics on city-issued tests.

That is because they fear such topics “could evoke unpleasant emotions in the students.”

Dinosaurs, for example, call to mind evolution, which might upset fundamentalists; birthdays are not celebrated by J’s Witnesses; and Halloween suggests paganism.

Even “dancing” is taboo, because some sects object. But the city did make an exception for ballet.

The forbidden topics were recently spelled out in a request for proposals provided to companies competing to revamp New York City’s English, math, science and social studies tests given several times a year to measure student progress.

“Some of these topics may be perfectly acceptable in other contexts but do not belong in a city- or state-wide assessment,” the request reads.

  1. this is actually good – i am an English teacher in a chassidishe school, and half of the book is blacked out – but the question is aren’t they making laws to force teaching about toeavah? they should make sure toevah is not included either

  2. i thought fundamentalists believe in Dinosaurs, only they do not believe they came from evolution, but were created either on the 5th or 6th day of maase bereshis and that this is what the Tanach calls dragons (taninim, livyason, etc.)?

  3. The PC movement in the US is growing by the day. Contrast: Sarkozy’s imam bans. Anti-semitism and anti-Israel sentiments aside, the Europeans say what they believe. Think Angela Merkel: “Multiculturalism has failed…”

  4. Anyone with common sense should be offended by the extreme to which political “correctness” (???) has affected the municipal, state, and federal decision-making process. Why is it that common sense is the least common of the senses?

  5. my hs daughter here in Ohio had to write an essay (just this past week) as to why the Palastinians may objest to a Jewish state in the middle east. this is on the state given OGT test needed to graduate here in OH.

  6. Here’s what the tests look like now…

A train full of leaves New York at 6 PM.

    1. What is its carbon footprint?

    2. if there are 100 and 30 of them are married what percentage is that?

    3. How much must the sea level rise before the tracks are flooded?

    4. List 6 low-salt, low-calorie, trans-fat free items available in the snack bar.

    5. Calculate how much fossil fuel could be saved by covering the train with solar cells.

  7. seriously???? soon they’re gonna ban the color black because it might offend african americans. who pays these idiots?

  8. In this case the political correctness is actually in favor of the ultra-conservative – and right-wing yeshivos too. Why the complaints?

  9. I hope my children grow up learning about the broader world and science from a torah perspective. My yeshiva taught us about dinosaurs, and science and the theory of evolution – but our teacher was a rav who had a degree in science and presented the frum response as part of the education. I know this won’t work for everyone, but removing foundational scientific theory from a state high school test is an alarming step.
