The recent uptick in Covid-19 cases across New York City has prompted increased caution from the city.
The city has moved to a “medium” alert level from “low” as new cases per 100,000 people over the last seven days has surpassed 200. The latest figure of 209.02 cases per 100,000 is the highest since early February.
Patients hospitalized with the virus also have increased over the last month, but still remain below 500. During the omicron-induced surge around the holidays, hospitalizations in the city peaked above 6,500 in January, according to data from New York State.
Guidance for the new alert level encourages New Yorkers to wear a face mask in public indoor settings where vaccine status unknown.
Manhattan has the highest transmission levels of any borough, though it has seen numbers trend lower since mid-April, according to data from the city. All other boroughs have seen levels rise over the last couple weeks, prompting the change in the city’s alert level.
“This reflects a growing wave of omicron sub-variants,” Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine tweeted Monday.

Everyone was vaccinated by now so there is no restrictions that would protect us any further.
And it’s an undercount. We had 6 people positive after pesach and only via rapids. My next door neighbor 3. Who would we report to? And that’s us who actually did tests.
I was tested last week using an at-home Abbott BinaxNOW test. It is a good rapid antigen test and many of the testing sites use it. They have an app you download to get instructions on how to do the test and it makes it easy to report your results. It would be interesting to hear from Abbott what fraction of the tests they have sold have had results reported.
Unfortunately there are still over a million and a half New York City residents who have not been fully vaccinated, and a lot more who need boosters. So we are ripe for another nasty wave of hospitalizations and deaths, especially as fewer and fewer people wear masks or try to keep social distance.
