shoesNew York State lawmakers have granted some much-needed tax relief for hardworking families. Beginning April 1, any clothing, footwear or other related items sold for less than $110 will be exempt from the state’s 4 percent sales tax. The qualifying amount for the exemption has doubled since last year, when it applied only to apparel at or below $55.

While the economy is slowly regaining its strength, working- and middle-class families are still getting back on their feet. The sales tax cut will provide much-needed help with clothing and footwear expenses.

For local businesses, this exemption couldn’t come at a better time. An influx of customers, including shoppers from neighboring states like New Jersey and Pennsylvania that come to New York to enjoy the tax-free break will provide a boost to the local economy. The exemption will apply to all relevant items purchased in person, over the Internet, by phone or mail.
