Newt Gingrich on Thursday walked back his claim that President-elect Donald Trump is abandoning his promise to “drain the swamp” of Washington, D.C.—something he repeated to his supporters throughout the final weeks of the campaign, the Daily Beast reports.
Mere minutes after Trump tweeted that he was still committed to “draining the swamp,” Gingrich posted a video to Twitter on Thursday morning in which he admitted that he “made a big boo-boo” with his initial suggestion. “I talked this morning with President-elect Donald Trump, and he reminded me he likes ‘drain the swamp,’” Gingrich said. “I mischaracterized it the other day. He intends to ‘drain the swamp.’” Earlier Thursday morning, Trump’s former campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, echoed Gingrich’s initial comments, saying “draining the swamp” is “probably somewhere down at the bottom” of Trump’s list of priorities.
