Former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari has won Nigeria’s presidential election, narrowly beating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.
This is the first time in the country’s history that an opposition leader has democratically beaten out the ruling party. Buhari won by around 2.1 million votes, and according to a spokesman, Jonathan has already called to congratulate him and concede defeat.
Nigerians have been frustrated by Jonathan’s ineffective response to Boko Haram violence, which has escalated dramatically over the past year, killing thousands. Read more at Al Jazeera.
