nixonThe Nixon Presidential Library yesterday released 150 hours of audio recordings from the months of January and February, 1973, and uncovered new details on the former US President Richard Nixon’s views. In one of the conversations released in the recordings, Nixon mused about global anti-Semitism. “This anti-Semitism is stronger than we think, ya know,” he said in a conversation to Evangelist Billy Graham shortly after Israel shot down a Libyan passenger plane in Sinai, and on the eve of then-Israeli Prime Minister Gold Meir’s visit to Washington.

“It’s unfortunate, but this has happened to the Jews, happened in Spain, it happened in Germany, it’s happening, and now it’s gonna happen in America if these people don’t start behaving.

“It may be they have a death wish, that’s been the problem with our Jewish friends for centuries,” said Nixon.

Graham replied saying, “Well, they’ve always been through the Bible at least, God’s timepiece. He has judged them from generation to generation and yet used them and they’ve kept their identity.”

Nixon is known for making quite a few anti-Semitic remarks during his term, but this did not prevent him from sending weapons to Israel during the Yom Kippur War.

  1. Forget Nixon, Listen to what Graham had to say “Well, they’ve always been through the Bible at least, God’s timepiece. He has judged them from generation to generation and yet used them and they’ve kept their identity.”
Great Mussar Haskel to be learned.

  2. This was writen up in a famous magazine a few years ago. He actually believed that it was, G-D instigating the nations against us. And that it’s all because of our attitude towards, the well-being, of the children of G-D, which are not the Chosen ones.

  3. Without realizing it, Nixon’s words — “it’s gonna happen in America if these people don’t start behaving” — were somewhat prophetic.

Indeed, we learn from Chazal that when Jews stop behaving like Jews (i.e. when they stop behaving according to Torah) and start behaving instead like the goyim amongst whom we live, the Ribbono Shel Olam reminds us that we are off the derech. As Billy Graham answered Nixon: “He has judged them from generation to generation.”

Increased anti-Semitism…increased economic hardship…increased misfortune to both individuals and to the community. These are all in the news of the day. The Ribbono Shel Olam is, indeed, judging a generation of American Jews who have stopped behaving like Jews, and have instead massively assimilated into the American culture. The golus of the goldena medina has swallowed us. What Nixon foresaw should not be a surprise to us at all.
