christieLakewood, NJ – New Jersey Governor Chris Christie paid a low-profile visit yesterday to the School for Children with Hidden Intelligence (SCHI) in Lakewood.

SCHI specializes in helping severely disabled children. Founded in 1995, the highly acclaimed school has grown by leaps and bounds, and now occupies a modern, state-of-the-art facility on Oak Street.

Christie stopped in Lakewood on his way to an event on Long Beach Island. During his visit, Christie toured a classroom and met with students, school officials and leaders of the frum community.

Acting Superintendent Laura Winters and Helen Tobia, supervisor of special education, also were invited to meet with the governor’s team at SCHI.

“I had no knowledge that he was coming, none whatsoever,” Carl Fink, a member of the local school board said of Christie’s visit. “I am hoping that he revisits the Lakewood school system in September.” Fink later said SCHI officials used poor judgment in failing to invite any Lakewood school board members. “To the point where I think it is highly insulting,” Fink said.
