A Catholic priest in North Caldwell is suing NJ Gov. Phil Murphy over the governor’s stay-at-home directive, alleging in a new federal lawsuit that the state’s prohibition of religious services during the coronavirus outbreak violates the U.S. Constitution, North Jersey reports.
The Rev. Kevin Robinson says in the four-count complaint that churches can easily accommodate the kind of social distancing that keeps some commercial businesses open. Murphy issued the directive, Executive Order 107, on March 21, banning all gatherings of individuals with some exceptions, not including religious services. Murphy’s order violates the First and Fourteenth amendments, the lawsuit alleges.
“Order 107 articulates no rationale whatsoever for treating religious gatherings as a greater threat to public health and safety than commercial gatherings that involve manifestly far greater risk of viral transmission among millions of potential customers or in the enclosed premises of the offices maintained by ‘essential’ businesses and the media,” the complaint reads. although we don’t intend to gather minyanim against safety recommendations , i would be happy if we could hold minyanim with more than 10 people with social distancing between them in a large backyard
A very sensical complaint. If stores are open
(And full of people) and they get to decide how many people can come in, why not the shuls. Suppose you have a big shul why not designate 50 spots for people to come in safely and daven. Is shul less important than Target?….
Like the Vatican, basements of tifless GLOBALLY need good bedikas chometz. So in order not to discriminate against ‘them’, shuls have to be closed too.
because they were a danger to the general public
WHY AREN’T OUR WE SUEING
DOES IT BOTHER A CATHOLIC PRIEST MORE THAN US????
He’s not in golus, we are.
I just donated to the legal fees
just over a month ago everyone was sure that Governor Phil Murphy would be recognized as a national hero
Finally some שכל to fight this imbicile. And unfortunately and to our great disgrace this comes from a priest. Our leaders and askonim that have been touted as heroes should bury their heads in shame that a goy a priest recognized the injustice of closing the shuls while “essential” stores like liquor stores stayed open but we sat back and did nothing to get our message out. But a priest got up and did something.
This is what you get when you vote Democrat. From the start you knew that Murphy is a leftist progressive and adores taxes. Yet you put him in. Why ??????????
Have any of you who are complaining even thought of th posibility that a shayla was asked about suing and the gedolim advised not to?
