NJ Toeivah Marriage Advocates Making Last Push for Lawmakers to Vote

toeivah-rally-trentonToeivah rights advocates in New Jersey made what could be a last-ditch push today to persuade lawmakers to legalize toeivah marriage quickly. In a time when lawmakers are calling the issue a matter of conscience, activists have been pushing the idea that some religious leaders are accepting of toeivah marriage.

That argument was a main thrust of a rally outside the State House today that attracted 150 people, a modest crowd for a State House rally.

A group of some 150 clergy of various faiths sent lawmakers a letter today asking them to support toeivah marriage.

Social conservatives, including the New Jersey Catholic Conference and a group of Yidden from Lakewood who usually avoid statewide political issues have led the opposition to the bill.

The rally was quiet, perhaps because the activists are aware that the chance for the law to pass is slipping away.

Last month, the legislation’s sponsors in the state Senate, sensing he didn’t have enough support from his upper house colleagues to pass it, asked the Assembly to try to pass it first. Last week, Assembly Speaker Joseph Roberts deferred back to the Senate.

If that didn’t kill the bill, it left it close to death.

Gov. Jon Corzine, a Democrat, has said he would sign a law to legalize toeivah marriage. But time is running out. He’s to be replaced on Jan. 19 by Gov.-elect Chris Christie, a Republican who says he’d veto the bill.

Lawmakers could technically approve a law by noon Jan. 19 and see it signed. But given the Legislature’s schedule, it would probably have to happen by Jan. 11 if the bill is to be passed.

Most arguments from the pro-toeivah marriage groups are trying to change the minds of a group of Democratic lawmakers who have opposed it.

On Monday, Assembly John McKeon, a Democrat from South Orange, called on colleagues in that category to support the bill. “Twenty years from now, we’ll all look back at this time and say, ‘What were they thinking?”’ if the law isn’t adopted.

Only five states — Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont — now recognize toeivah marriage.

New Jersey has a civil unions law, which gives toeivah couples the benefits of marriage but not the title.

  1. “Only five states — Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont — now recognize toeivah marriage.”

Four of these things belong together, one of these things is not the same…

  2. Have you noticed that the liberal
    Democrats support toeivah relationships?

    Stop voting for liberal Democrats.
    They’re against morality; they’re against
    free enterprise. Vote against those
    liberal lunatics.

  3. As Jews we cant be protesting minority rights. We are guests here ourselves. Dont think our neighbors arent watching. We could be on the next cattle car.

  4. Mehu,
You are way out there in politically correct lunacy land. Get a grip! This is legalized toeiva that will impact every yid! You have to be willing to die for an ideal in order to live for it!
Kudos to HaRav Moishe Bresler from Lakewood for leading the charge!

  5. Dr. Berger:
It would appear that you unfortunately have fallen for the GOP claims hook, line and sinker. While there are obviously areas in which we disagree with the “Left”, neither are the “Right” our friends. Unless you are a wealthy, white Christian there is no way that you are truly a welcome member of the GOP. At least the Democratic Party is tries to do Chesed and tries to be involved in Tikkun Olam. That is not to say that we agree all the time, but it is better than saying that there is no room for anyone else in the room. Furthermore, the GOP claims of being pro-free enterprise do not include most of us in the Jewish community. It refers to the top 1% of society. Most of us are not helped one iota by the Republicans tax plans, health plans etc.

Too many are falling for sound bites and have stopped thinking for themselves and looking at actual data. How unfortunate.

It would appear that you unfortunately have fallen for the Democrat claims hook, line and sinker. While there are obviously areas in which we disagree with the “Right”, the “Left” are the sworn enemies against any morality and the Torah. Unless you are a black, Spanish or feigala there is no way that you are truly a welcome member of the Democrats. The Republican Party tries to do Chesed and tries to support morality. That is not to say that we agree all the time, but it is better than saying that there is no room for anyone else in the room. 7. You’re all falling for something. Our redemption is to be found in neither group ela Avin sheBashamayim.

Now, over the years the conventional daas Torah has been that if an incumbent has served honorably and delivered, revote him or her in, regardless of party. OTOH, IF, IF that’s not the case then usually the Republican is the better option. (I can’t say always; think of a vote between Pat Buchanan and just about anyone.)

  8. #6 “GOP claims hook…”

    This guy unfortunately supports disgusting
    toeivah behavior.

You see he identifies himself as a Democrat. Obama, the Dummy-In-Chief is also
sympathetic to this perversion. (That was one
of the first things that idiot spoke about
    after his election.)

    Instead of going after Islamic
terrorists, instead of stopping the Nigerian
    Islamic freak, closing Gitmo, these
liberal psychopaths and traitors sell America
    down the latrine.

    Their support of toeivah just
    highlights their moral turpitude.

  9. Obama, the Dummy-In-Chief still
wants to close Gitmo and give those
    Islamic scoundrels a jury trial.

That idiot now blames the system.
But the Dummy-In-Chief is the system.

    At least the Dummy-In-Chief should
    fire Janet Napolitano. The Dummy-In-Chief
Pelosi, Napolitano are to blame along with
all the other liberal and socialist and
    homosexual loving liberal Democrats.
(There are some exceptions. Not all Republicans are “tsadikkim”. But the current
gang is using Chicago dirty politics to ruin
    this country.)

Back to the subject: toeivah deviance. Their supporters have found
a home in the Democrat Party.
