New Jersey transit systems are using video and audio surveillance systems for security reasons, but they are inevitably recording passengers’ conversations.
NJ Transit’s light rail fleet will have the technology soon too, according to spokesman Jim Smith.
“Passengers have repeatedly told the agency that security is a priority in the quarterly scorecard surveys of riders,” Smith said. “The onboard surveillance systems are also a deterrent for crime and unruly behavior.” Read more at NJ.com.

Surveillance is useful as much as the willingness to act upon it. Spying on the law abiding citizens while refusing to go tough on the actual criminals, reveals the big brother intent of the architects of this surveillance system.
