met-life-stadiumNJ.com reports: Nearly 100,000 Jewish men and women will gather at MetLife Stadium Wednesday to celebrate their study of the Talmud.

The organizers of the Siyum HaShas expect it to to be the largest celebration of Jewish learning in centuries.

The participants in the gathering are celebrating their completion of the Talmud, a record of Jewish law and other writings. Many of the 100,000 have read one page of the Talmud a day, finishing 2,711 pages in seven and a half years.

The gathering is expected to be so big that the state Department of Transportation is advising commuters to avoid Routes 3, 120 and 17 near the Meadowlands from this afternoon.

“This is a major event and I think that seeing the celebration will convince others to join in our studies,” according to Rabbi Gedaliah Weinberger of New York, chairman of the Daf Yomi Commission, which is hosting the celebration.

“The completion of this program is not simply about being united. I believe that the Talmud is the ideal vehicle to understand Judaism.”

This is the 12th Siyum HaShas celebration. The 11th took place in 2005, at Madison Square Garden and the former Giants stadium.

All 93,000 tickets for the event have been sold, the Jewish Press reported. The organizers will bring in 10,000 folding chairs, remove the goalposts and cover the turf at the stadium with hard plastic flooring.

Leon Miller, a Teaneck resident, told the New Jersey Jewish Standard that he met with a small study group at Congregation Bnai Yesherun in Teaneck every evening to complete his study of the Talmud.

“After seven and a half years, it’s nice to know you’ve done something for seven and a half straight years,” he said.

New Jersey Transit issued a travel alert saying to expect large crowds and delays at major stations due to the event.

  1. If this number of Yidden is impressive, think about how Matan Torah must have looked with over 3,000,000 Jews (women and children included, 600,000 was only men aged 20-60)
