There have not yet been any known cases identified in New Jersey of the rare pediatric inflammatory condition Kawasaki disease, which is being investigated as possibly linked to the coronavirus, the state’s top health official said Tuesday.

State Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli was asked about the disease, a rare blood vessel disorder, a week after European doctors warned health officials to be on the lookout for it and a day after the New York City health department announced 15 children with symptoms of the syndrome have been hospitalized.

“I have not gotten any reports of the multi-symptom inflammatory Kawasaki disease that’s affecting individuals throughout the United States,” said Persichilli during the state’s daily coronavirus press briefing in Trenton. “I had not gotten notification of any of those cases to date.”

“We can’t say for sure that it’s COVID, but it certainly would be a big coincidence.  We’ve never seen anything like this before with all these kids with inflammatory syndrome,” said Dr. Aryeh Baer, a pediatric infectious disease specialist.
Dr. Baer says he’s treated five children with those symptoms at Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital in Hackensack, though none of them tested positive for COVID-19.
