Noam Shalit, father of abducted IDF soldier First Sergeant Gilad Shalit, has accused Israel of failing miserably as far as his son’s plight is concerned. Speaking at the National Bar Association’s annual conference in Eilat, Shalit said: “For four years an entire state, with all of the means at its disposal – two prime ministers, two defense ministers, two IDF chiefs of staff and and a head of [the Israel Security Agency] service – failed miserably, and I regret to say that there are no other words to describe it. [They have not been able] to bring Gilad home, although he is just a few kilometers away from the southern border of the State of Israel.”
“For four years the public and the family have been told that the kidnappers’ demands will encourage additional abductions, as if rejecting the current [proposed] deal will cause the terror organizations’ motivation to disappear all of a sudden and people will be able to walk freely through the neighborhoods of Gaza.”
“For four years they are trying to frighten us and the citizens of Israel with terrifying scenarios that carrying out the prisoner deal to free terrorists and murderers will ignite a new intifada here and there will be blood and fire in our streets, [that this] will take us 10 or 12 years back [to the days of Yasser Arafat’s Terror War against Israel].
“It seems as if the the State of Israel’s entire defense conception and its approach to the war on terror rest upon Gilad’s slender shoulders.”
“We will no longer be willing to accept this ongoing haggling over the life of our son, a flesh-and-blood young man. We, Gilad’s parents, his family and tens of thousands of of his friends and supporters, stand here before you facing the government of Israel and its leaders and request justice. We cry out and demand liberty for our son Gilad, before it is too late.”
“This is not an empty cliché. The time for talk has run out. It is time to realize the commitment of the country and its leaders to its soldiers,” Shalit said emotionally. “I ask you, honorable judges and jurists – do we not also have a commitment to fight for the basic human rights of Gilad Shalit, who has not seen the world for four years?”
