North Korea: We Won’t Give Up Nuclear Weapons Unless U.S. Removes Threat

North Korea has said it will not unilaterally surrender its arsenal of nuclear weapons unless the United States first removes its nuclear threat from the Korean Peninsula, the Associated Press reports.

The statement, released by the official Korean Central News Agency, comes during a deadlock in negotiations between the countries over the denuclearization process and removal of international sanctions. It appears to mark the latest setback in talks after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump met in Singapore over the summer and agreed on the goal of “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula. North Korea accused Washington of misrepresenting what the leaders had agreed on during the summit. “The United States must now recognize the accurate meaning of the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, and especially, must study geography the right way,” the statement said.
