aaron-liberman1Northwestern University freshman Aaron Liberman on Sunday was the first player known to wear a yarmulke in a Big Ten basketball game, Big Ten Network reported.

According to an article in the Chicago Sun Times last month, Liberman, a 6-foot-10, 215-pound forward from Valley Torah High, in Los Angeles, is only the second Division I player to ever wear a yarmulke on the court. The only other player to do so was Tamir “Jewish Jordan” Goodman, who played for Towson in 2000 and 2001.

Liberman led Valley Torah to a 25-5 record and a CIF Southern Section championship as a senior, the first time a Jewish school had claimed a section title in basketball in California. Liberman then spent a year in Israel before coming to Northwestern, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

Despite the extra help from above, Northwestern on Sunday lost 74-51 at Michigan.

  1. If you read the article, he only played ONE minute out of the entire game – when it was already over, in garbage time! Why can’t these “Yarlmulka” wearers ever get a normal starting position on a proffesional team? Even Goodman wasn’t a starter. This “Jewish Jordan” is nonsense. Like I’ve commented before, there are a lot of Jewish kids in summer camps ( like Munk, Manavu, Agudah, etc…) That can play better than these so called professionals! The collages keep these “token” “Orthodox” players in order to avoid discrimination law suits!

  2. People will leave comments criticizing, but if one stops and thinks what strength it took Liberman to do this. B’emes, a Kidush Hashem!

  3. You would think that Hashem might not require you to wear a kippah during active times especially considering that a kippah could fall off and even cause spills and slipping on the court. But still in all, it is inspirational at a certain true level. Nice job.

  4. It is not only at games tgat he proudly shows his Yidishkeit but he often spends Shabbos in West Rogers Park and davens at Khal Chasidim there. It is not only for show

  5. #1 We are not writing about his athletic ability or prowess. We are commenting and complimenting a Yid playing with a recognizable symbol to all that he is proud to be a Jew.
Thank you Aaron, his parents, the valley chevrah and Rabbi Stulberger and rebbeim.

  6. #1 You really think there are guys from camp Munk, Agudah…. That can play division 1 basketball? That’s news to me. You do realize that this kid is 6’10 won a high school championship and still doesn’t play.

  7. In regards to #1’s comments, I would assume that you never played too much basketball or followed basketball for if you did you would know that the “Jewish kids in summer camps” have no chance at competing at all with proffesional ballplayers. I played on a couple of the camp staff teams and it isn’t even close. There is no agenda against any Jews here – they simply aren’t good enough.

  8. #4 – there’s this stuff like velcro – you sew it to the kipah and it sticks to your hair like glue. I forget the brand name, but it works pretty good. Try your local seforim store.

  9. Who can forget our line up back in the 80’s which included Chaim Karp, Mooslet Neiman & Ralph Milstein? We were the best back then.

  10. if u really think that kids from jewish summer camps can compete with this kid. you obviously don’t know or will ever know basketball and u should stop talking about it because u r clueless!! this kid could shut out any one in the mountains!

  11. in regard to #1s comment u clearly have never played basketball or watched it. quite frankly I'm wondering if uve ever seen one u clearly have no idea what you are saying and is embarrassing that someone so clueless can even make a comment like this. it c

  13. #1 that’s the dumbest thing ive ever heard in my life. s/o to A. Rudman of the Munk basjetball team, but really?? you think he can make the Big Ten? GET REAL!! this leiberman guy is legit, theres a reason why he was a heavy recruit, unlike the players from camps. c’mon man, watch some basketball then speak!
