NOT FAIR: Why Are People Judging Those Going to Orlando for Pesach?

Dear Editor,

I don’t get why some have to put others down in such a pathetic, judgmental way in regards to them going to Orlando for Pesach, almost rooting for there to be problems.

1) Most Yidden who have money to spend work really hard for it. And if they don’t, it’s because the Aibishter decided to bless them with parnassah. How they spend it is none of anybody’s business. Jealous? That’s an issur deoraisa. Work on it.

2) We are not talking about the uber-wealthy here. This is not a Pesach program in Dubai that serves deer meat. Most of the folks who got messed over are your typical middle-class family who really can use a vacation. I’ve stayed home and I’ve done Orlando. The second option is much harder to execute. It involves much hard work and planning. The only added expense under normal circumstances is perhaps 2.5-3k for the house and the traveling expenses. Most people drive, by the way.

3) The point is that the people who got hurt are really in trouble and are stranded. We are talking about your average family who needs a bit of a break from daily routine. Don’t we all?

I hope that it will somehow work out, and watching Klal Yisroel mobilize to help these families is inspiring.

Sincerely,

LK out in Champion’s Gate

  1. “your typical middle-class family who really can use a vacation”

That’s the issue right there. Pesach is NOT the time for a vacation. There is a mesora of Pesach, with all its myriad halachos and hashkafos. It’s davka Pesach when Yiddishe mishpachos are supposed to stay in their daled amos, away from the goyishe mehalchim and taavos.
You need a vacation? You can take one immediately after Yom Tov ends. You have mid-winter vacation, Cratzmach/New Years vacation, the entire 2 months of summer vacation, visit daughter in Israel seminary vacation, Thanksgiving vacation, etc etc etc… Punkt now on Pesach one “must” “needs” a vacation?! A vacation from what?

    • PO, you’re out of your mind! You’re the kind of people who pull Klal Yisroel down. Who told you you’re supposed to “stay in your daled Amos” on Pesach? Or are you referring to the posuk which directs the yidden in mitzrayim to stay in their houses on the night of Makas B’choros? Who died and put you in charge of what’s the “right way” to celebrate the Yom tov? If a large extended family wants to have Pesach together, and Orlando is a great place to do it, with no foolish Covid rules and great weather, where do you get off paskening against it? You should be ashamed of yourself!

    • people working in non jewish companies usually use up all their vacation days for pesach and succos if they keep off during chol hamoed. if they dont take a vacation during pesach they cant have one ever. while no lechatchila you can easily hear that some people need a break otherwise they would be working for years without one.

    • As you very correctly point out, Pesach and, of course, every Yom Tov is a time for more Avodas Hashem, not less. So, on the contrary, for many people, their traveling somewhere for Yom Tov — taking a “vacation” — may very well be doing just that! The Mesora of our Torah is — there is a Mitzva in the Torah of — Aliyas HaRegel, that for each of the three Yomim Tovim of Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos, we are REQUIRED to TRAVEL to the Beis HaMikdash in Yerushalaiyim. Of course, as right now, we do not have the Beis HaMikdash, right now, we cannot do this Mitzva But the Mitzva is there, and in the Tefilas Mussaf for Yom Tov, we lament about that right now, we cannot do it.

We should think a bit deeper into the meaning of “vacation,” for it does not necessarily mean a time when people just slack down and lax off from doing what they should be doing. Instead, what it often means to many people is doing something “special.” In other words, people often realize that it is important to take times to move away from their daily working grind of procuring their sustenance and other basic physical needs in order to see more of what is life. They thus often travel to different places to see more of what is this world that we live in. In the context of a not as tight schedule, they can utilize the time to ENJOY and APRECIATE the world and their lives and to thus begin to think about what is the MEANING and the PURPOSE of the world and life. Of course, this contemplation must lead to the realization of WHO is the CREATOR of the world and life and what is our obligation to Him.

In this way, a “going on vacation” with a “taking a trip” can most certainly be a great vehicle for wonderful intensive elevation in our Avodas Hashem, and, when done for a Yom Tov, a great Kavod of Yom Tov.

    • There’s a lot of truth to what you are writing but there’s much more to it too. But sadly, as one that lives in Yerushalayim and would find people/friends thinking this way , I will still see them blinded on the issue which to me is just as hefkeiros or even more in leaving their daughters and sons alone in Eretz Yisroel for Pesach. If it is a girl from a broken home or bal teshuva background it can be understood but girls during one of the most mature and final years of being in their parents homes and living Pesach according to the Mesorah and detail they grew up with. Walking around eretz yisroel and joining other families who until now knew that their most insular and careful chag will be theirs ; but being literally forced to invite and host these girls who have their own mesorah and families over the seas is utter irresponsibility and a blatant indifference to our Mesorah…

  2. Ofcourse you don’t get it! If you got it, you wouldn’t be down there….
Here is something to consider. You LUXURY is to sell your house and go relax in Miami. This will be your childrens NECESSITY….. What will your kids look like when they grow up? Always consider the chinuch of your kids. If one out of the 10 get the wrong message, then your whole trip was not worth it.
And btw, if you really need a vacation, you can relax in the summer like everyone else and save the extra expense for your $10,000+ vacation bill in the country…..

  3. You answered your own question

    “Jealous?”

    Exactly right!

You say : ” That’s an issur deoraisa. Work on it.”

    No thanks, Thats too hard

    • I don’t agree… The excuse “jealous” is the excuse used much like the liberals use the word “race” often to get what they want. Zero to do with jealousy; Pesach is a chag of taking your mundane regular life and through avodas parach turn it into something godly and holy. Living through the nissim and story of m’avdus l’cheirus.. It’s not about us only. It’s about the greatness of hkbh in us and to us. Running away from it and finding entertainment and distraction in earthly, materialistic and “questionably holy” places is literally missing the point.

  4. I’m very concerned about the lack of social distancing and mask wearing. The minyanim in Orlando are indoors (gasp!) in small cramped quarters and there is no social distancing whatsoever. Very very troubling and disturbing. After all the gains we’ve made, and all the karbanos we’ve already sacrificed, this is reckless. Vinishmartem is the greatest mitzvah of this generation. We look to our doctors, as our new daas torah, for guidance. All those who flew down to Orlando on jammed packed planes, must quarantine for at least 10 days, the duration of Yom Tov. We don’t need any more rodfim.

    • You are going to be suffering from PTSD from not needing to worry anymore about what people are doing and how “cramped” shuls are. I believe all of you are going to need treatment for it. What’s going to happen when you can’t worry and tell off people anymore??? oy vey! what’s going to be if cramped shuls are allowed? oh no! What are you going to do when you have nothing that is righter than the other to say to them anymore??? very concerning…
V’nishmartem is NOT the greatest mitzva of this generation. Certainly not when it refers to others. Each to its own. Hashem leads this world and Tefilla is the greatest power of all. Where we control our siddur in our hand and say words that are directed upwards towards hkbh and not controling others actions with words directed to others down here.

  5. I can’t believe what I’m reading.
For crying out loud no one was asking for anyone else’s viewpoint on weather going to Orlando is the correct thing to do. They each have their own rabanim that I’m sure they discussed with and have their blessings. I am not in Orlando but I discussed my situation with my rabbi and he was happy with my out of town arrangements. Why can’t some people be sympathetic to another Jews pain???? Where is our ahvat chinam??

    • Not a single legitimate Rav recommends his mispallelim to abandon him and the kehilla and flee down to Orlando, a place devoid of Torah and Yiras Shomayim.
Baaley taavah that abandon their Rav & Kehilla on a Yom Tov shows a serious lack of yiras shomayim and any commitment. In other words their Rav & Kehilla means nothing to them. Who cares about the Rav? Who cares about the kehilla? Who cares about the tzibbur? I’m brave enough to tell the Aibishter that I’m good enough on my own. My wife & I can’t be bothered with others. We don’t need the zchus hatzibbur. Al tifrosh min hatzibbur means nothing to me. My wealth will protect me. Frightening mihalech.

  6. I think the problem is not jealousy but setting new standards, social pressures and being pegged “less-than” or nebach if you cant afford this new “necessity”. Yes we can “fargin” another family their luxuries, but not when it affects our “standing”.

    • Neither of those is true. If your Pesach is warm, loving, happy and brings you to feel more redeemed of your negative character traits – then you would only feel happy for others or compassion for them. The jealousy and negativity would have no room if you worked to feel satiated on YOUR Pesach.

When you gripe about others setting standards for you – it shows that you still need to put much more focus on the spirituality of your Pesach

  7. EVERYONE IN THIS WEB SITE REFERS TO ”YIDDEN” . I STILL DONT KNOW WHAT A YIDDEN IS. I WAS THINKING I T IS A THROW BACK DISCOVERY FROM A CAVE SOMEWHERE RECENTLY DISCOVERED….I DONT KNOW…. I JUST RECEIVED AN ”EMAIL ” FROM MASHIACH, NOOOOO NOT MOSHIACH, AND ‘HE’ ASKED ME HIMSELF …”WHATS A YIDDEN?” HE WANTS TO KNOW IF THE WORLD IS UNITED AND READY FOR ‘HIM’ . I ADVISED ‘HIM’ TO WAIT A BIT LONGER AS BORO PARK REFUSES TO SPEAK ENGLISH OR HEBREWBECAUSE ONE TOLD ME IN THE STORE THAT YIDDENS NEVER SPEAK HEBREW, ITS FORBIDDEN UNTIL MO -MO MO SHIACCCCH COMES. I ASKED HIM IF IT WAS OK TO CHANGE HASHEMS LANGUAGE FROM ORIGINAL HEBREW TO THAT DISGUISED LANGUAGE WHJICH IS A CONSTANT REMEMBER OF HORRIBLE TIMES? THE OTHER GUY STRAIGHTENED HIS WIDE WIDE BRIM HAT WHICH MEANT HE WAS VERY PIOUS FLAPPED THE TAILS ON HIS TUXEDO SUIT CURLED HIS PIOUS SIDE LOCKS AND WENT INTO HIS VOLKSWAGEN OR MERCEDES, they all look alike, WITH HIS VOLUNTEER DRIVER BECAUSE HE WAS A PIOUS MAN AND CHANGED HASHEMS HOLY LANGUAGE TO A DISGUISED LANGUAGE…..AND CUT OFF A YOUNG WOMAN WHEELING A BABY CARRIGE ON 13th AVE. I YELLED TO HIM TO GET A REFUND ON HIS KIPA AND ZTIZTIT AS HIS TIRES SQREECHED RUNNING FROM THIS SEPHARDI JEW (ME). THE WIDE BRIMMED MAN STANDING NEXT TO ME ASKED ”VUZ VUZ??. I ASKED HIM, HE WAS WEARING A VERY WIDE BRIMMED HAT SO HE MUST BE VERY VERY ”RELIGIOUS”… DID SCHINDLER HIRED JEWS BECAUSE THEY RECEIVED A 50% CUT IN USUAL GERMAN WAGES AND NOT REALLY FOR HOLY ALTRUISTIC REASONS?” . HE ASKED ME WHERE DID I PARK MY CAMEL. I ANSWERED HIM ”RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR GESTAPO MERCEDES”.I SHOUTED TO HIM….”WHATS A YIDDEN BECAUSE I AM A JEW AND ARE YOU SAYING YOURE NOT A JEW UNITED IN ONE NATION?” HE SCREAMED BACK ‘MESHUGA !’……AS I CONTINUED ON MY TOUR OF SCHNITZEL STORES I FOUND A DELICIOUS SHWARMA STORE…..I BOUGHT 2..SAVED ONE FOR TONIGHT…..STILL MUMBLING TO MYSELF…VATS AAH YIDDEN, VUZ?
