lotteryNew York officials are warning people about a lottery scam involving phony checks that appear to have been issued by the state.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says scammers are sending out letters telling people they have won a lottery or sweepstakes drawing.

Recipients are told to send money to the scammer in order to secure their “full winnings.” But money sent to the scammers cannot be retrieved.

DiNapoli says the checks included with the letters are counterfeit with a forged signature of the comptroller.

The comptroller is urging people who receive such a letter to contact his toll-free fraud hotline at 1-888-672-4555.
