ny democrats jewish leadersBrooklyn, NY – In an effort to strengthen relationships between elected officials and Jewish community leaders, a group of democratic state senators met yesterday with a diverse group of Brooklyn’s Jewish community leaders from all across the religious spectrum.

Opening remarks were delivered by democratic conference leader, State Senator John Sampson, who welcomed the community leaders and introduced the four elected officials in attendance: State Senator Eric Adams, State Senator Daniel Squadron, State Senator Kevin Parker and State Senator Joseph Addabbo. Also present at the meeting were Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, head of New York Board of Rabbis, and numerous other community leaders from Williamsburg, Borough Park and Crown Heights.

Senator Sampson thanked participants for taking the time to attend the meeting and continuing to maintain a strong relationship with democratic leadership, assuring attendees that their concerns will be well represented in Albany. Senator Sampson stressed the importance of maintaining open lines of communication between community representatives and elected officials, giving community leaders a voice in Albany and ensuring that those who hold public office can advocate for their constituent’s needs. Senator Sampsonalso discussed the recent passage of the TAP program and the efforts being made to increase minimum wage, which will be a boon to those who are struggling to make ends meet.

Each of the four senators present at the meeting addressed the group, assuring them that they stand as staunch advocates for the Jewish community, with Senator Squadron, who represents the Williamsburg community, thanking Senator Sampson for his efforts on behalf of all New Yorkers, particularly residents of Brooklyn.

Numerous issues were addressed at the meeting including policy changes, budget issues and job training programs that could potentially be implemented by the state. Shomrim coordinators from Flatbush, Borough Park and Williamsburg brought up the urgent need for security cameras within all communities and neighborhoods and Senator Adams vowed to continue to advocate for cameras in all neighborhoods, including Crown Heights, Williamsburg, Borough Park and Flatbush. Also discussed was the plight of Jacob Ostreicher, who has been held for over one year in a Bolivian prison and Senators Sampson and Adams assured participants that they are working closely with the Department of State on this matter.

“I thought it was important for the leader of the democratic conference, who shapes the leadership of the democratic conference, to hear firsthand the minutiae of issues that are of concern to the leadership of the Jewish community and to understand its distinct needs,” said Ezra Friedlander, CEO of the Friedlander group, who was also in attendance. “This was a frank, open exchange and there was a strong sense that this was a dialogue that allowed for back and forth between participants. It is always important for government to hear first-hand what is on the mind of local leaders and that goal was certainly accomplished today.”

  1. I am just wondering as everyone else should. Who are these so called Jewish Leaders, and who appointed them as “Leaders of the Jewish Community”. Its an aberation that people go around claiming to be Jewish Leaders”, and presenting themselves as such to politicians thereby fooling the politicians into thinking that are actually meeting with “leaders”. These people are self appointed and annointed and are only out for themselves to show themselves off to the uninformed politicians.

  2. Rabbi Potasnik has a radio show every Sunday on WABC. He does NOT represent Bnei Torah at all! The Democrats are in the minority in the Senate. Why would they “meet” with them? I’ll tell you what this is all about. This is all a ploy

  3. It appears that ther democrats are somewhat despperate as they have lost faith, coneection and support from the “right -wing” jewish community.

Rabbi Potasnik has aided causes of jewish interest and a rov should be consulted on how to interact with him.

  4. Matzav are a bunch of little immature baby’s! I see you are so scared, you’re afraid of your own shadow! Way to go!

  5. All we need to make this a democratic process is to elect from our community the Jewish leaders who will meet with the Democratic leaders we put into office via an election process.
