NY: Speed Cameras Will ‘Collect Data’ But Won’t Ticket Offenders

New York City will still know how many people are zipping through school zones even with its speed cameras dark — but it will be powerless to ticket the offenders, according to DOT officials, the NEW YORK POST reports.

One-hundred cameras installed near schools to nab lead-foot drivers will still “collect data” but the city can no longer issue tickets, because the state law empowering the city to do so expired Wednesday, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg said during a press conference.

Sensors attached to the cameras will trip when drivers zoom by above the speed limit — giving officials data on how many scofflaws zip through school zones — but the cameras will not record their license plates or send out tickets, according to a DOT rep.

With Albany’s blessing, the city installed 100 permanent and 40 “mobile” speed cameras in city school zones starting in 2014. But state lawmakers failed to re-up the program before the legislative session ended last month, so the city must draw it down. Of the 140 cameras, 120 were set to dark Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., but 20 of the mobile lenses will remain in use until the end of August, officials said. Read more at the NEW YORK POST.

  1. They should not end this program. It works to slow down speeders, and, in my opinion, any type of traffic fine is a way to tax people who have been living under the radar and avoiding taxes in other ways. These people are usually not careful with their cars and this is a way to make them pay their fair share.
