Paul Krugman of the NY Times writes: Is it just me, or are the 9/11 commemorations oddly subdued?
Actually, I don’t think it’s me, and it’s not really that odd.
What happened after 9/11 – and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not – was deeply shameful. The atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.
A lot of other people behaved badly. How many of our professional pundits – people who should have understood very well what was happening – took the easy way out, turning a blind eye to the corruption and lending their support to the hijacking of the atrocity?
The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.
I’m not going to allow comments on this post, for obvious reasons.

Wow! If commemorations are subdued this year, it might be because the current president has made the patriotism brought out by 9/11 go out of style.
I dont read anything that goes thru the ny times system.
it is slanted.
it is vicious.
it is hateful.
it is anti torah.
why do quote their garbage?
I come to this site so that I dont have to go to theirs.
The coward shuts the comment line “for obvious reasons”, implying that the sophisticated, well educated NYT audience (of 2) should be spared the disdainful rants of the knee-jerk right wing neocon neanderthal fanatics. If they have any capacity for shame, the NYT should release this wortless, miserable excuse for a human being from his job.
All americans know Kurgman is a wacko liberal. Like most liberals.
Thank g d for president bush and mayor guiliani.who still living and not forgeting what happened on 911

Obvious reasons are the media and politicians are not ready to point/accuse ISLAMIST fundamentalists and their sheiks and mosques.
This is the writing of a sick liberal with a lot of hatred towards the right.
This NYT writer should be reminded that those who attacked us on 9/11 would never allow him to talk that way about their leaders. President Bush and Mayor Guiliani are examples of people who stand up for the rights of anyone to give their opinion, twisted as it may be.
Krugman is a hater! He is a useless piece of Liberal trash! No comments?! What a stupid weisel coward! Too bad HE wasn’t in the towers on 9/11!
donald rumsfeld just cancelled his subscription to nyt after reading this article
Krugman is right.
Politicians have been exploiting 9/11.
But, the democrats have been no better than the Republicans on this.
I applaud matzav.com for publishing this article that rings so true given all of the distinguished journalism that has exposed Guiliiani over the last 10 years. It’s a good thing that matzav has reckoned withg publishing this.
