fire-sassoonAssemblyman Dov Hikind:

“The horrific tragedy that struck the Sassoon family has left all of us deeply shocked and saddened. We need to examine the safety of hot plates and check our smoke detectors immediately. Do not take for granted that your smoke detectors work, test them tonight. Our community is reeling from this unspeakable catastrophe. Our prayers are with the Sassoon family and we will continue to pray for the speedy recovery of the survivors.”

Councilman David Greenfield:

“All New Yorkers are horrified tonight at the tragic loss of nearly an entire family in Midwood. This catastrophe has severely impacted Brooklyn’s Jewish community where the family lived and the children went to school. Our sense of loss is so overwhelming that all we can do now is pray for the family, especially the mother and daughter who are still hospitalized. By all accounts, this is a wonderful family whose relatives are pillars of the Sephardic Jewish community that I am privileged to represent. We pray that they make their way through this unbearably difficult time.”

NY City Council Speaker Mark-Viverito:

“I join all New Yorkers in mourning the devastating loss of Eliane, Rivkah, Sara, David, Yeshua, Moshe and Yaakob Sassoon, who were tragically killed in a horrific fire in Midwood, Brooklyn last night. My thoughts and prayers are with the Sassoon family and the entire Jewish community as we grieve the lives lost in this horrific tragedy and pray for Tziporah and Avigayil’s speedy recovery. May G-d comfort the family among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”

Council Member Chaim Deutsch:

“I am heartbroken for the family that fell victim to the tragic fire in my district early this morning. The Sassoon family is in all of our hearts tonight as we mourn and pray with them. I am grateful to the NYC Fire Department, the NYPD, and the members of Flatbush Hatzolah who responded quickly to combat this horrific fire; I thank Mayor de Blasio, my colleagues in government, and the community for the outpouring of support.”

Council Member Jumaane D. Williams: ” The Midwood community is dealing with unfathomable heartbreak. It is devastating to hear that so many children’s lives were lost in last night’s fire, one of the worst our city has seen in years. Many prayers of recovery for the mother and only surviving child, both of whom are in serious condition. Although words are probably of little comfort to the father and extended family during this difficult time, let us keep them in our prayers as well. Though this tragedy happened a few blocks outside of my district, I am familiar with the community and believe that this tight-knit neighborhood will rally around to support the family as we all should. In addition, my office is here to help in anyway possible.”

Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition:

The entire Flatbush community is in mourning after the horrific fire on Friday night. The FJCC is assisting immediate and extended family members and the broader community on several fronts. We thank the many Rabbonim, community members and Klal organizations from across the Jewish community that have reached out to us in an effort to assist the family. We are working with the Mayor’s office and our local elected officials and are grateful for their assistance. The Community is deeply grateful to the FDNY, NYPD, members of Flatbush Hatzoloh, Misaskim, Chesed Shel Emes, Amudim and grief counselors from Ohel and Chai Lifeline for their immediate and heroic response to this tragedy. The funeral is scheduled for Sunday afternoon. As the situation remains fluid, we will communicate more specific needs as the needs require. We pray that the family and those effected by this overwhelming tragedy are able to be strong during this extremely difficult time. Please be continue to pray for the injured family members. May we only share Besuros Tovos.
