New York City livery cabs and limousines will have to show their bona fides under new rules designed to crack down on unlicensed livery drivers. The Taxi & Limousine Commission voted today to require the city’s 40,000 approved car-service cars and limos to display special permit stickers on their windows. Their drivers will have to display their TLC licenses inside the car.The rules could be implemented as soon as this summer, provided they aren’t changed after a two-week comment period.
TLC officials and driver advocates say the measures will help passengers avoid rogue drivers with rundown vehicles and keep them from siphoning off legitimate cabbies’ fares.
Drivers of the city’s famous yellow cabs already must display their licenses.
