New York City Mayor-elect Eric Adams kicked off the Chanukah celebrations Sunday in New York City, as he was honored with lighting the shamash of the World’s Largest Menorah which stands proudly on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.

The Mayor said: “As a member of the Brooklyn community- and the rich Crown Heights community- we know what the Rebbe did for all of us and how he spread the importance of Chanukah, and the celebrations that we are seeing all over the world now. And having Chabad Houses that were opened to spread the importance of living in unity, so I’m proud to be here and participate in this moment as we bring our city back together. We need each other, no matter how challenging it is, we know New Yorkers are resilient, strong and we’re people of faith. And I say to all of you and your families: Have a happy and safe Chanukah!”

The towering 36-foot menorah—certified by the Guinness World Records as the world’s largest—took its traditional place on Fifth Avenue and 59th Street, right outside of the Plaza Hotel. It will be lighted every Chanukah eve at 5:30 pm.

Over the years, the World’s Largest Menorah was lit by New York City Mayors Ed Koch, David Dinkins, Rudolph Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio; Goys. Mario Cuomo, George Pataki and David Paterson; U.S. Senator Charles Schumer and many other dignitaries.

Bright LED rope lights running the length of all eight branches honor the victims of the pandemic.

Lighting a Chanukah Menorah in front of the City Hall, Parliament
buildings, top of cars or other public places, etc. is not the Mitzvah
of פירסומי ניסא that Chazal instituted.

Those who do light there with a ברכה are עובר on ברכה לבטלה.

Perhaps it would be better for the mayor to light the candle
and the Shamash should be lit by the Yid so he won’t be
    עובר על ברכה לבטלה

  2. What a chilul HaShem!!! Goyim lighting a menorah to celebrate the festival established to commemorate our non-assimilation with the Greeks.

Whatever happened to mitzvas Chanukah nair ish u’vaiso?

  3. So first it’s י״ט כסלו with satmar. Next 1st night of Chanukah on 5th ave. What’s next before he parties on the 25th, זאת חנוכה????

  4. i applaud lubavitch for being everywhere in the world when a yid needs help. but what is there point in having a non-jew light a chanukah menorah? what is their point in having ‘the largest menorah in the world’? does ‘pirsum hanes’ include the public spitting in the face of greece?
