A new poll shows that the Democrat hoping to unseat Mayor Michael Bloomberg has lost some ground. The survey by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion finds that William Thompson Jr. is 16 points behind the billionaire mayor, 52 percent to 36 percent.
The last Marist poll released Sept. 21 had Thompson behind by 11 points. A Quinnipiac poll Sept. 24 had him trailing by 16 points.
Thompson has failed to close the gap despite running more television ads and attacking the mayor with greater force.
It may boil down to money, Thompson has spent 1/16th of what Bloomberg has spent.
The Democrat raises money while Bloomberg dips into his $17.5 billion fortune.
The latest Marist poll was taken Monday through Wednesday. The margin of error is 3.5 plus or minus percentage points.
