NYC Sales Tax up to 8.875% Today

New York City shoppers started paying sales tax of nearly 9 percent today when a half a percent rise kicked in.It’s the first permanent raise in the tax in over 35 years. The city introduced the tax to counteract economic woes brought on by the recession, hoping to raise $950 million a year additional revenue.

But shoppers are footing the bill – those making $125,000 in income could pay as much as $356 more each year in taxes.
