Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn South Police commanders met with the educational leadership of the Flatbush Jewish community last night, in an historic gathering and outreach effort under the auspices of the Flatbush Jewish Community Coalition (FJCC).
Chief Owen Monaghan the commander of Brooklyn South brought all the precinct commanders responsible for the areas covering the greater Flatbush community, the 66, 61, 63 and 70th police precincts, as well as their community affairs teams. The FJCC brought together the leadership of many of the Flatbush based Yeshivas, Bais Yaakovs and other institutions representing over 10,000 students in an unprecedented gathering and display of unity, along with key FJCC executive members.
Issues covered included safety and security of the students in school and traveling to and from, crossing guards, special events and holidays, crime levels and new initiatives, and the importance of coordinating efforts with the NYPD for school safety. Flatbush Shomrim coordinators Tzvi Weill and Nathan Rosenberg participated, as did Rabbi Moshe Leib Ausfresser, Director of the NYC Board of Educations’ office in charge of school bussing for Yeshiva students.
In attendance were Roshei Yeshiva, Menahalim, and Executive Directors from Flatbush area mosdos including Yeshiva Chaim Berlin, The Cheder, Yeshivat Darche Eres, Yeshiva Derech Chaim, Yeshiva Ohr Yisroel, Mirrer Yeshiva, Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim, Yeshiva Toras Emes, Yeshiva Ateret Torah, Yeshiva Ahavas Torah, Yeshiva Ohr Yitzchok, Yeshivat Shaarei Torah, Yeshiva of Brooklyn, Masores Bais Yaakov, Bnos Yisroel, Bais Yaakov Academy, Prospect Park Yeshiva, Bais Yaakov D’Rav Meir, and Touro College.
A lively discussion ensued, including past issues and current security related concerns, and Chief Monaghan thanked the FJCC, Chairman Josh Mehlman and Raphael Treitel the FJCC police liaison for their leadership efforts on behalf of the community. Monaghan pledged that he and his commanders are, and will be, very accessible to the school headmasters and administrators, as “there is nothing more important than the safety of our children.” The meeting enabled the educational leadership to establish direct contact with the local NYPD commanders.
