The New York Police Department will no longer require people who are arrested to remove religious headwear during mug shots as part of a settlement in a federal lawsuit.

A group of Muslim women sued New York City after they said they were forced to remove their hijabs after arrests and be photographed with their head and hair uncovered.

In an initial complaint filed in federal court in New York, one of the woman said that removing her hijab, a garment worn by many Muslim women around the world, and being photographed with it at her shoulders made her feel “humiliated, distraught and panicked from this coerced violation of her religious practice.”

  1. Head and hair uncovered should not include the face. Besides, any facial covering for the entire face should be forbidden in any event. Who knows who could behind behind it? Very dangerous.

  2. Matzav, as usual, is a master of misinformation.
The picture is misleading, as is the fact that the article doesn’t bother to take a minute and explain what a hijab is, when the target audience (i.e. religious jews) has no real idea about it.

To make it clear, a hijab is a covering, worn by Muslim women, which covers the head and chest. It does not always cover the face. In fact, most hijab wearers do NOT cover their faces, just their hair.

Making a Muslim woman remove the hijab and uncover her face is, to her, no different than making a Frum woman remove her wig or tichel/snood/turban etc. or making a Jewish man remove his yarmulka. Such requirements had existed in the past for official documents, and were hard fought against.

If we want our religious rights to be respected, we need to respect the religious customs of others, no matter what we may feel or think about them. Once such rights start being trampled on, we also lose
