bloomberg-obamaNew York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is expected to get the Republican line on November’s mayoral ballot, won the ultimate seal of approval in Democratic politics yesterday when President Obama called him the “outstanding mayor of New York.”

The White House gave Bloomberg props by inviting him to Obama’s bill-signing yesterday for legislation to expand national service funding.

After saluting several dignitaries on hand – including former President Bill Clinton and Caroline Kennedy – Obama thanked “the outstanding mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg.”

Short of an endorsement, the praise was still political gold coming from the nation’s most popular politician with huge approval ratings in the city where Bloomberg’s chief rival is Democrat Bill Thompson.

The White House also gave Bloomberg a plum seat for the bill-signing – in the front row next to former Secretary of State Colin Powell and his wife Alma.
