obama4President Barack Obama says the interrogation technique known as waterboarding constitutes torturing, disputing Republican presidential candidates who say they would reinstate the practice.

Obama called waterboarding “torture” and said it was “contrary to America’s traditions” during a news conference at the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit.

Republicans Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann said during a Republican debate on Saturday that they would reinstate the technique that former President George W. Bush authorized and Obama banned.

The practice simulates drowning and is viewed as torture by many.

  1. I’m not weighing in on whether the CIA should use water-boarding or not, but it’s difficult to defend the position that it’s not torture. Herman Cain said “I believe that water-boarding is not torture. It’s an advanced interrogation technique.” What is his “belief” based on? Did he ask the CIA agents who voluntarily subjected themselves to water-boarding and lasted only an average of 14 seconds, whereas it is typically utilized for 20-40 seconds?
