Obama Going On Vacation…Again

obama-golf-golfPresident Obama and his family are heading to Martha’s Vineyard tomorrow for a week of rest and relaxation, but not before facing the ritual grumblings that presidential vacations are extravagant and waste taxpayer money.

While Congress is in the midst of its own five-week break, Republican officials haven’t missed the opportunity to question the president for heading to the upscale Massachusetts community at a time when automatic cuts to the federal budget have left the Defense Department and other agencies furloughing employees.

Rep. Chris Stewart, R-Utah, said no one begrudges the president taking some time with his family. But Stewart, who earlier this year introduced a resolution calling on Obama to skip vacations until the White House restored public tours – mothballed as a result of across-the-board federal cuts known as sequestration- suggested the president’s trip to the upscale community in Chilmark, Mass., appears “tone deaf.”

“Most of the people in my district could never afford to visit Martha’s Vineyard, and those who could would feel uncomfortable vacationing in a place that has a reputation for being for the elite,” said Stewart in a telephone interview from his district.

Obama is scheduled to arrive on Saturday after he and first lady Michelle Obama travel to Orlando, where he will address the Disabled American Veterans National Convention. While on the Vineyard this year, the Obamas will be staying at the $7.6 million vacation home of David Schulte, a Democratic campaign donor and corporate finance manager.

Diana Waterman, chairman of the Maryland Republican Party, listed personal trips that the president and his family have taken to Hawaii, New York and Europe since the start of his presidency that were partially paid by taxpayers. With unemployment still at 7.4%, Waterman said going to the Vineyard seems exorbitant and suggested that Obama instead take his time off at the presidential retreat at Camp David.

“When there are so many people out there looking for jobs and Americans are struggling to make ends meet, this sends the wrong message to people who are struggling to survive,” Waterman said.

  1. Not trying to be contrary but the more vacations Obama takes the better off the country is. Can you imagine the damage he would do if he weren’t so lazy?

  2. Maybe when Mr. Obama gets a new camera for his office too, Matzav the spear checker can run around and complain about his fascination of Inanimate Objects and photographs.

  3. Then-President George Bush was on vacation at his ranch during Hurricane Katrina and didn’t bother his head about it until the news channels were full of pictures of people marooned or dying. So where was the outrage then? Eight days isn’t exactly excessive. Congress is off for five weeks, during which they will do just what they’ve been doing all year – nothing.

  4. The issue isn’t that Obama is going on vacation. The issue is how he is doing it.
Millions of taxpayer dollars have gone to Obama vacations. He doesn’t have to go to Martha’s Vineyard (and fly Air Force One to get there!). This isn’t his one and only vacation this year.

He could go to Camp David, which would cost taxpayers far less and send a message to the people that the president cares about the feelings of those who can’t afford to go anywhere with their children in these hard economic times.

  5. Bush spent 1020 days on vacation during his 8 years in office. Almost 3 Full Years! More than any President since the 1920’s

In 2005, Bush took the longest single vacation — 5 weeks — of any President in 36 years. President Bush spent 32% of his presidency on vacation.

Of the 77 total “vacation” trips the former president made to his Texas ranch while in office, nine of them — all or part of 69 days — came during his first year as president in 2001. Bush made 25 trips — a total of 78 days — to Camp David in 2001. Holy 9/11!

Bush spent 487 days at Camp David, 490 days at his Crawford ranch, and 43 days in Kennebunkport.

At 1,020 days, Bush was close to being on vacation more days than President John F. Kennedy’s total days in office (1,036).

Presidents Clinton and Carter vacationed the least of any of the last seven chief executives.
