obama-indiaIslam is a great religion but there is a need to isolate those who have distorted its vision, President Barack Obama told a gathering of college students in India today.

“Well, the phrase jehad has a lot of meanings within Islam. It is subject to lot of different interpretations. But I will say that first Islam is one of the world’s great religions and over a billion people practice Islam,” Obama said at the packed forecourt of St. Xavier’s College here.

“The overwhelming majority want peace, justice, fairness and tolerance. All of us recognise that this great religion, in the hands of a few extremists, has been distorted. One of the challenges we face is how to isolate those who have distorted its vision,” Obama said when a student asked for his views on jehad.

“The religion teaches peace, justice, fairness and tolerance. All of us recognise that this great religion cannot justify violence,” he added.

“We affirm that Hindu or Muslim or Christian or Jew or any other religion…we all need to treat each other with respect and dignity that Gandhi referred to. It’s a major challenge not only in India but also around the world,” said Obama, who looked at ease while interacting with the students gathered from six Mumbai colleges.

  1. Those that practice Islam, as in pray five times a day, are the Sharia types. Moderate Muslims don’t really exist. The moderate ones of those people are the ones that don’t really practice Islam. That is why they are “moderate”.

  2. I would say that more than the “us”, the phrase beginning with “We affirm that…” is very telling for anyone who cares to pick up on it.

But if Obama is Muslim, or has Muslim leanings, he is quite ignorant of his own religion. The Koran speaks in quite graphic detail about what should be done to/with those who do not practice Islam and/or believe in Islam’s founder.

It is true that there are moderate Muslims out there. But they fall more or less into two categories: if they are a majority, they are a silent one; and there is a tiny minority of them who speak out against terrorism and jihad.

  3. How many local humanitarian organizations have come from this great religion of peace? Where is this peace-loving majority hiding? Why are they silent? Is it because they’re busy planning their next attack?
The President is wrong on so many levels. He’s wrong in his analysis. He’s wrong on his facts, and he’s dead-wrong if he believes that his Islamic Brown Nosing accomplishes anything aside from generating scads of derision from the Moslem, world.
