obama-health-carePresident Barack Obama has signed an executive order designed to ensure that no federal money can be used for elective abortions under the nation’s new health care legislation.

Obama agreed to the order on Sunday to ensure passage of the health care overhaul that is central to his agenda. The deal won the votes of anti-abortion lawmaker Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan and a bloc of other House members who wanted assurances that existing federal policy would not change.

The order affirms a prohibition on federal funding of abortions, except in certain cases or where there’s danger to the woman’s life.

Obama invited lawmakers to the Oval Office for the order signing today but no members of the news media were allowed in the room.

Obama signed into law the most sweeping overhaul of U.S. health care since Medicare, but one last chapter in the epic struggle is still playing out in the Senate.

Senators are debating a package of fixes to the new health law, demanded by House Democrats as their price for passing the mammoth overhaul legislation that will extend coverage to 32 million uninsured Americans over the next decade. Obama signed the bill on Tuesday, declaring “a new season in America” as he sealed a victory denied to a line of presidents stretching back more than half a century.

The fix-it bill under consideration in the Senate eliminates a special Medicaid deal for Nebraska from the new law, softens a tax on insurance plans that was repugnant to organized labor, sweetens the pot with more expansive subsidies for lower-income people and offers more generous prescription drug coverage to seniors, among other changes.

Its approval at the end of this week is virtually assured, since it’s being debated under fast-track budget rules that allow passage with a simple majority instead of the 60 votes usually required for action in the 100-seat Senate. Democrats control 59 Senate seats.

  1. #1-his mother died because she got pulmonary hypertension, missed work enough because of the hypertension to get fired, thus losing her health insurance, which meant she couldn’t get treatment and died.

  2. This wasn’t a decision he did of his own accord, rather he was coerced into doing so by individual democrats with rigidly correct moral values, in order to have his heath care bill passed.

  3. An executive order cannot countermand a congress-passed law. Even if it could – the same pen that wrote the directive can ‘unwrite’ it as well.
