obama2President Barack Obama has warned that new “tactical” disagreements loomed between Israel and Washington, but vowed to leverage his administration’s “creative powers” in the cause of peace.

Obama, who has had a testy relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, spoke at length on the stalled peace process at a fundraiser for his 2012 reelection campaign grouping Democratic friends of Israel.

He said that as a difficult, challenging time loomed in the Middle East over the next few years, one inviolable principle was that the bond between the United States and Israel “isn’t breakable.”

“What is also going to be true is that both the United States and Israel are going to have to look at this new landscape with fresh eyes,” Obama said, arguing the Arab Spring had changed the context of regional diplomacy.

“It’s not going to be sufficient for us just to keep on doing the same things we’ve been doing and expect somehow that things are going to work themselves out.

“We’re going to have to be creative and we’re going to have to be engaged. We’re going to have to look for opportunities where the best impulses in the Middle East come to the fore and the worst impulses are weakened.”

“There are going to be moments over the course of the next six months or the next 12 months or the next 24 months in which there may be tactical disagreements in terms of how we approach these difficult problems,” Obama said, vowing to bring to bear his administration’s “creative powers” for peace.

The president said that Israel and the United States were united on a broader vision for a secure Jewish state able to live in peace with its neighbors “where kids can get on the bus or go to bed at night and not have to worry about missiles landing on them.”

Obama ignited the latest US row with Netanyahu last month when he said in public what had been private US policy, that 1967 territorial lines, with agreed land swaps should be used to demarcate Israel from a future Palestinian state.

His statement provoked a public scolding from Netanyahu during a subsequent White House visit. The Israeli leader also stressed the “indefensible” nature of the 1967 lines.

  1. “He said that as a difficult, challenging time loomed in the Middle East over the next few years, one inviolable principle was that the bond between the United States and Israel ‘isn’t breakable.’”

That’s all what counts. Us libs don’t care about what he does, just what he says.

And Bush didn’t even say this

  2. President Obama’s true feelings re. Jews:

“MK Arye Eldad (National Union) responded to the news of Morris Pollard’s death with harsh words for US President Barack Obama for not releasing Jonathan Pollard to see his father before he died.

“ ‘The people of Israel will not forget Obama’s cruelty, inflexibility and the maliciousness of ignoring all the requests and petitions for Jonathan’s release.’ He added, ‘The US president, that wasn’t even able to make this basic humane gesture, cannot wonder why the Jewish people will enlist all their powers to prevent his reelection.’ ”

  3. are the new eyes that obama expects israel to look with the eyes of obama himself? or maybe the eyes of his long time minister jeremy wright? perhaps, but then, israel would need to read all the arab propaganda to know what they are ‘really’ doing.
obama doesn’t get it. israel wants peace, the arabs want a judenrein palestine. i’m not questioning the president’s motives, but his views are frightening.

Are you really the one who critsized me for not making a point? You have never addressed a single point ive made on any post. You have bizzare illogical accusations and conspiracy minded magical thinking.
What has Obama done against Israel? did he pressure them to give away azah? did he demand they end a defensive opperation to wipe out terrorist nests in jenin? just tell me what he did. You and your like minded hateful ilk accuse him of pressuring demanding Israel return to the 67′ borders, which while true and a terrible idea, is no different from bush’s postion. Here is a link to an arutz sheva report from 05′ (I may have liberal leanings, but you can hardly accuse them of that). dont be scared read it open your mind to the emes just a little bit. It wont bite. Not that the truth never hurts, but this time it wont I promise.

  5. this article is from Brietbart who publishes lies very frequently and did so here.
GW Bush publicly said on May 26, 2005 at the joint Press Conference in the Rose Garden:
“Any Final Status Agreement Must Be Reached Between The Two Parties, And Changes To The 1949 Armistice Lines Must Be Mutually Agreed To.”

So the author of this article – Breitbart- lied in his own article as he wrote:
“Obama ignited the latest US row with Netanyahu last month when he said in public what had been private US policy, that 1967 territorial lines, with agreed land swaps should be used to demarcate Israel from a future Palestinian state.”.

That is a lie. It is a statement of fact–that is false. Not only did Bush say all of this publicly, but he subsequently engaged in the negotiations that brought about this peace offer that GW Bush bragged about being part of ( as he writes in his presidential memoir, Decision Points”:
” Ehud Olmert says that on “August 31, 2008, three weeks before he resigned, he offered 100 percent of West Bank land ( 6.8% in land swaps), 10,000 Palestinian refugees returning to Israel’s final borders, and the holy basin of Jerusalem’s Old City coming under joint Israeli-Palestinian-American- Jordanian-Saudi control. He last met with Abbas on September 16 of that year – five days before he resigned, and more than six months before he left office – and Abbas did not respond or make a counteroffer.” http://www.jpost.com/Features/FrontLines/Article.aspx?id=218340
[Ehud Olmert with the Jerusalem Post]
George Bush extolls this breakthrough in his memoirs published recently and takes credit for being part of it and making it happen.

George Bush hosted Abbas in the Rose Garden on May 26, 2005 and said at the Press Conference
“Any Final Status Agreement Must Be Reached Between The Two Parties, And Changes To The 1949 Armistice Lines Must Be Mutually Agreed To.”

That was Bush’s saying that the borders remain 1949 borders and Israel doesnt have a right to them unless the Arabs agree.

Just like all the public statements of Bush Condi and Powell, along with the the Wiki like leaked Palestine Papers, this was the public policy known to all and the only negotiations that ever took place were “swap” negotiations.

Arutz Sheva exposed Bush in an analysis on May 29, 2005 –
    http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/82861
Arutz Sheva took on Bush for this in 2005 but the Republican onslaught and the Jewish Republican Coallition were silent and didn’t claim that GW Bush was trying to destroy the State of Israel, they didn’t claim GW Bush threw the State of Israel under a bus, and they didn’t claim that the Bush position was a danger to the State.

Rice: US entirely opposed to Har Homa

Rice tells ‘Post’ Israel must honor Road Map commitments; President Bush en route to Israel.
On the eve of US President George W. Bush’s visit to Israel and the region, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice placed the issue of settlement activity in the West Bank and east Jerusalem at center stage, telling The Jerusalem Post that “Har Homa is a settlement the United States has opposed from the very beginning.” Rice, who was accompanying Bush en route to Israel overnight Tuesday, said that “the United States doesn’t make a distinction” between settlement activity in east Jerusalem and the West Bank and that Israel’s road map obligations, which include a building freeze, relate to “settlement activity generally.”

The Full White House Transcript of GW Bush in the Rose Garden May 26, 2005, in the press conference with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas: quote:
” Israel must continue to take steps toward a peaceful future, and work with the Palestinian leadership to improve the daily lives of Palestinians, especially their humanitarian situation. Israel should not undertake any activity that contravenes road map obligations or prejudice final status negotiations with regard to Gaza, the West Bank and Jerusalem [ ed; this means part of Jerusalem will be given to the Palestinians. Therefore, Israel must remove unauthorized outposts and stop settlement expansion. The barrier being erected by Israel as a part of its security effort must be a security, rather than political, barrier. And its route should take into account, consistent with security needs, its impact on Palestinians not engaged in terrorist activities. As we make progress toward security, and in accordance with the road map, Israeli forces should withdraw to their positions on September the 28th, 2000.
Any final status agreement must be reached between the two parties, and changes to the 1949 Armistice Lines must be mutually agreed to. A viable two-state solution must ensure contiguity on the West Bank, and a state of scattered territories will not work. ( There must also be meaningful linkages between the West Bank and Gaza). This is the position of the United States today; it will be the position of the United States at the time of final status negotiations. The imminent Israeli disengagement from Gaza, [and] parts of the West Bank, presents an opportunity to lay the groundwork”

  6. “It’s not going to be sufficient for us just to keep on doing the same things we’ve been doing and expect somehow that things are going to work themselves out.

Exactly. Giving up territory over and over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Let your ears hear what your mouth has spoken.
