Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on Saturday called capitalism “irredeemable.”
“Capitalism is an ideology of capital — the most important thing is the concentration of capital and to seek and maximize profit,” she said during an interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas, according to Bloomberg News.
“To me, capitalism is irredeemable,” she added, arguing that capitalism’s goals come at a cost to people and the environment, Bloomberg reported.
The congresswoman, who has described herself as a democratic socialist, added during her interview that “we should be scared.”
“Just as there’s all this fearmongering that government is going to take over every corporation and government is going to take over every business or every form of production, we should be scared right now because corporations have taken over our government,” she said.

There is no magic money coming from a magical place, but hard work and building resources. Maybe she should try it some times, she is not fed by magical money from a magical place and I bet she will never ask where it is coming from or whom. I’m glad that she’s so forthright in expressing her beliefs. That’s the beauty of our democracy. A significant number of our fellow citizens share her viewpoint. Now their ideas will battle it out with the ideas of their opponents.
President Trump’s election, far from destroying democracy, has led to its flourishing. It was entirely predictable that a response to Trump would arise from the left. Presenting a clear left-wing alternative is more constructive than simply attacking Trump.
I’m not scared of democracy. I expect the 2020 election season to be a very exciting one.
