A data breach may have left personal information vulnerable for current and former federal employees around the country, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management announced Thursday.
In April, the office detected a cyber-intrusion affecting its information technology systems and data, which had happened before the office recently implemented tougher security controls.
The office has partnered with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Computer Emergency Readiness Team, as well as the FBI, to determine the full impact of the breach.
But the office did warn that “personally identifiable information” may have been vulnerable – and about 4 million people might have had their information compromised.
