parchmentThe oldest siddur ever found will be on display for public viewing at the Bible Lands Museum in Yerushalayim. The 1,200-year-old siddur is the oldest in existence today, dated from the ninth century. The siddur will be on display for a month at “The Book of Books” exhibition, courtesy of the Green Collection.

The manuscript, which consists of some 50 pages, is written on parchment in archaic Hebrew with Babylonian vowels and is in its original binding.

According to estimates, the siddur was written during the time of the Gaonim of Babylonia. The siddur is divided into three chapters, including parts of Shacharis, pizmonim, and the Haggadah Shel Pesach.

  1. Suspicious. Which geonim used anything besides k’sav ashuri? The picture really doesn’t show the script clearly, nor does the “information” indicate whether the contents have parallels with what we still have of the siddurim of the RASAG and R. Amram.

  2. The collection is named for the Green family, founders and leaders of Hobby Lobby, the world’s largest privately owned arts and crafts retailer. The collection was assembled beginning in November 2009 by its original director, ancient/medieval manuscript specialist Dr. Scott Carroll, in cooperation with Steve Green, president of Hobby Lobby and the collection’s benefactor. The Green Collection is a compilation of more than 40,000 biblical antiquities planned to form the core of a permanent, national, non-sectarian Bible museum in Washington, D.C
