Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin, a likely contender for the 2016 Republican nomination for President, said today, “I don’t know” when asked if he thought President Obama was a Christian, the Washington Post reported.

Although informed the president had often spoken of his Christian beliefs, Walker maintained his ignorance. “I’ve actually never talked about it or I haven’t read about that,” Walker said. “You’ve asked me to make statements about people that I haven’t had a conversation with about that.”

He then pointed to the press for asking questions ordinary Americans don’t care about.

A spokesman for Walker later said the governor was taking a principled stand on such questions, not casting doubt on the president’s faith, which has long been a source of suspicion among conservative voters Walker will need to secure the nomination.

Walker’s comments come just a few days after former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani said, at an event supporting Walker, that Obama “wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up,” and that “I do not believe, and I know this is a horrible thing to say, but I do not believe that the president loves America.”

Walker also declined to comment on Giuliani’s comments when asked about Obama’s patriotism. “I don’t know, I honestly don’t know, one way or the other,” Walker said. “I’ve said that 100 times, too.” Read more at the Washington Post.
