most VP’s are picked by luck of the draw or gaining votes in certain areas of the country. Pence is a dud and if not for President Trump no one would ever hear of you.
President Trump was forced to take him as VP. But he was already switched in 2017 with a facemasked person whom Trump will announce as his VP one of these days. Most people will be shocked.

When asked whether Donald Trump had made the right choice when he chose him to be his running mate in 2016, Mr. Pence said: “I choose not to answer that question, and I believe I’m making the right choice.” When asked whether the American people made the right choice by electing him as Vice President in 2016, and by not electing him as Vice President in 2020, Mr. Pence said, “You’ve chosen some strange questions to ask me, but that’s YOUR choice to make, and it’s also MY choice not to answer them.” When asked if he would like one of the Fox employees to bring him some supper to eat, Mr. Pence said, “Thanks, but I just ate some high quality rib steaks, made from USDA Choice beef. I could have chosen the Prime beef, but I think I made the right choice.”

Pence stood up to the LGBT mafia when he was governor (unlike Trump, who asked openly LGBT peter thiel to introduce him at the 2016 GOP convention). No doubt that any defense of traditional values during the Trump presidency was due to influence of Pence. He probably does not have the charisma to win, and a traditional moral person has little chance of winning nowadays, but he would be a great president for those concerned about morality.
