Shoplifters are wreaking havoc in New York City to such an extent that high-end ice cream containers are now equipped with special locked lids to deter heartless thieves.
The NY Post reports that Fairway supermarket located on the Upper West Side has taken measures to safeguard $6 cartons of Häagen-Dazs by securing them with bolted plastic tops that can only be opened using a device at the checkout. Other stores have resorted to padlocking their freezers containing these delectable treats.
A sign at Fairway informs customers of the reason behind the barriers on the beloved summertime desserts. It states, “To help maintain the lowest possible cost, a protective lock has been placed on some units of ice cream. This lock will be removed at checkout by a store associate. We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Various other stores in Manhattan have also resorted to locking up their ice cream. For instance, the Duane Reade store at Broadway and 71st Street has secured its freezer door with a padlocked chain to safeguard tubs of Breyers ice cream and Oreo Cookie ice cream sandwiches, among other frozen desserts. An employee at the shop explained, “People used to come with garbage bags and fill up the garbage bags with ice cream, clear out our freezers.”
Another Duane Reade location at East 53rd Street and Third Avenue has also introduced padlocks on a freezer to prevent thieves from snatching ice cream, including Haagen-Daz and Magnum bars, according to an employee.
The CVS store on Second Avenue and 51st Street in Midtown has taken a similar approach by adding built-in locks on its freezer doors last month. However, some customers find this inconvenient as they have to wait for an available worker to retrieve the ice cream.
Shop owners are expressing frustration over the rise in ice cream thefts as well as overall shoplifting rates, which have increased citywide. In the first quarter of 2023, there were 13,738 reported incidents of retail theft, according to the latest available data from the NYPD. Comparatively, the average quarterly retail thefts in 2019 stood at just 8,750 before the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York City.

Thank you Kathy Hochul. Thank you for destroying NY. As long as 3 year old boys can wake up one morning and decide to be a girl, all is good. You know the WHITE liberal Karen voters will support you no matter what.
Vote the Democratic ticket and this is what you get!
Like that plastic cap will do anything.
A thief can just cut the bottom with a knife.
You won’t be able to resell the ice cream, but you can eat it.
Total racism. AOC, Sharpton, where are you?
why should any of the jewish schools want their curriculum similar to the public schools? . students are supposed to excell in what they are being taught, yeshiva educated children are taught not to steal, to be kind, to be fair, two read two different languages. from what i read on the news`, why would anyone want their schools to be substantially equivilent to the schools that teach shoplifting, rudeness, disrespect for other people’s property. i taught in a public high school for many years. when a student was threatened with expulsion for something he had done, his father was not upset by his son’s misdemeanor. he was upset because now his child would no longer be able to be on the basket ball team
