A Brooklyn lawmaker set off a social media storm Wednesday by denying the existence of Palestine and accusing Rep. Ilhan Omar of being an anti-Semite, the NY Post reports.

“Palestine does not exist,” tweeted Councilman Kalman Yeger, who represents Midwood and other neighborhoods with large Jewish populations. “There, I said it again. Also, Congresswoman Omar is an anti-Semite. Said that, too. Thanks for following me.”

The tweet was a direct response to a post by Zainab Iqbal, a writer for the blog Bklyner, who had posted a story she wrote in March 2018 citing Yeger’s previous anti-Palestine remarks.

The councilman’s comments drew 1,900 responses, — including from colleagues in the council.

“I denounce Council Member Yeger’s comments as they are unhelpful and unwelcome,” Speaker Corey Johnson tweeted.

“Comments like these do nothing to foster a peaceful solution, which is something we should all be working towards.”

“I love you, brother, but this isn’t helpful,” agreed Councilman Justin Brannan, who represents Bay Ridge and other sections of southern Brooklyn.

“As u know, I proudly represent one of the largest Palestinian communities in the country… Please don’t tell my constituents their homeland doesn’t exist.”

The tweet sparked Pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protests on Thursday. Protestors shouted at each other outside Councilman Yeger’s office on the corner of 16th Avenue and 45th Street

Hundreds of pro-Israel protesters drowned out the smaller crowd of Palestine-promoters.

Former Assemblyman Dov Hikind, who was vocal at the protest, said, “I couldn’t be more proud of our community and the Jewish people at large for demonstrating their unequivocal and resounding support for a fellow Jew when under attack by a hoard of anti-Semites.”

  1. “Palestine does not exist,” tweeted Councilman Kalman Yeger, who represents Midwood and other neighborhoods with large Jewish populations. “There, I said it again. Also, Congresswoman Omar is an anti-Semite. Said that, too. Thanks for following me.”

What was the point of that tweet other than looking for a fight?

I agree with the sentiment in the tweet but don’t see anything being accomplished and a lot of damage being caused by it.

  2. Please don’t tell my constituents their homeland doesn’t exist.”

BRAVO DOV HIKIND FOR YOUR STATEMENT:
said, “I couldn’t be more proud of our community and the Jewish people at large for demonstrating their unequivocal and resounding support for a fellow Jew when under attack by a hoard of anti-Semites.”

    • Screaming loudly doesn’t make you right, Dacon. It Just makes you loud. Drowning out facts by screaming over them so they can’t be heard likewise doesn’t change them as facts. It just makes you ignorant.
FACT: The land had been called “Palestine” since the early second century CE
FACT: The Greek historian Herodotus referred to the land as “Palestine” c. 450BCE
FACT: Even the Torah itself refers to Abraham residing in the land of the Philistim

Those last two are both long before the Romans.

Just like the French are called French because their people lived in France, where there is a land called “Palestine” it’s inhabitants are, by definition, Palestinian.

In addition, according to an Ottoman census of the period, the population of Palestine in 1878, BEFORE Zionism, was c. 450k Arab and between 20-25k Jewish. (The Creation of Israeli Arabic: Security and Politics in Arabic Studies in Israel. Palgrave Macmillan UK. p. 188.) Further Population studies indicate that the then population of c. 600k was 94% Arab. (The Population of Palestine: Population History and Statistics of the Late Ottoman Period and the Mandate. McCarthy, Justin 1990 Columbia University Press.)

So not only was there a land called Palestine, it’s Arab inhabitants (the overwhelming majority of the population) are rightfully called “Palestinians.”

  3. I don’t see why all of Yeger’s colleagues are so upset at his remarks. As anyone who knows one iota of recent history can tell you, Palestine was the name of the area of Eretz Yisrael that the British were given after WWI, by the League of Nations. Both Jews and Arabs lived there. The UN Partition Plan of 1948 divided that land in to a parcel for the Jews, which was called Israel by them, and a parcel for the Arabs which was called Jordan NOT PALESTINE. JEWS ARE AS MUCH PALESTINIAN AS ARABS ARE! The talk of liberating “Palestine”, or creating a State of “Palestine” is sheker shkorim she-ain kamohu! There never was a group of people or nation known as “Palestinians”. This is all a ruse to dupe the velt into making Israel give up more land to the Arabs so we can be pushed into the sea.
