menachem-stark-eric-adamsThe New York Post sparked outrage today with its front page featuring a photo of R” Menachem Stark and the caption: “Who didn’t want him dead?”

Politicker reports:

“Who did not want him dead? Who didn’t? His children did not want him dead,” declared newly-elected Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams today, speaking at his first major event since taking office at the start of January.

He was joined by members of Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community, who filled Brooklyn Borough Hall’s large rotunda, lining the walls and staircases, clapping and cheering as other officials and community leaders shared their anger.

“This is outrageous and unprofessional,” railed Councilman Mark Treyger, holding up the offending cover. “His grave is still fresh. He should not be put on trial! We need to find justice for his family.”

“In this country, we have freedom of the press. Is this freedom of the press? This is an outrage!” fumed Assemblyman Joe Lentol, who represents Williamsburg. “We all have faults! Does anybody with faults deserve this kind of treatment?”

Councilman David Greenfield went even further comparing the coverage of Mr. Stark to Osama bin Laden.

“New Yorkers, we’re a jaded bunch … We expect many bizarre things on the cover of our tabloids. But the one thing we do not expect is to literally kick someone while they’re down, and to condone the murder of an innocent victim. And that’s exactly what occurred in today’s New York Post,” he argued. “Even Osama bin Laden, when he made the front page of the New York Post, he-a terrorist who killed thousands of our citizens-got better treatment.”

Public Advocate Tish James called on the city’s government to cease buying ads in the Post for public notices, causing the room to erupt into applause. Two speakers referenced the Holocaust. (“If the Holocaust has taught us anything it is this: We need to condemn hate and hateful speech in its infancy,” one community leader said.) Many said they expected an apology in the paper tomorrow. “On the front page,” insisted Mr. Greenfield.

  1. According to a survey conducted by Pace University in 2004, the Post was rated the least-credible major news outlet in New York, and the only news outlet to receive more responses calling it “not credible” than credible (44% not credible to 39% credible).
It also pays to note that the big boss of the paper is the Murdoch Family ” The Post was again purchased in 1993 by Murdoch’s News Corporation. This came about after numerous political officials, including Democratic governor of New York Mario Como, persuaded the Federal Communications Commission to grant Murdoch a permanent waiver from the cross-ownership rules that had forced him to sell the paper five years earlier.[31] Without that FCC ruling, the paper would have shut down”. (Cited from Wikipedia) Perhaps people can somehow reach out to them.

  2. with all due respect members of our community shouldn’t be reading this despicable paper well before this story, as it is a paper which doesn’t belong in a jewish home. this story only enhances the NY post image as scumbags

  3. I seem to have a different take.

The despicable tabloid(s) being mentioned here will not respond to anything but force. That means their bottom line. Only putting pressure there may possibly accomplish anything.

However, after demonstrating how low they are, one wonders whether it is better to not give them the dignity of expecting anything better from them. They are entirely beneath contempt.

Something should probably be done; I just don’t know what at the moment. Boycotting their advertisers is only a start.

  4. We’ve always given the Post a pass despite its despicable trashy reporting because it takes conservative political positions. It is high time the frum community realized that just because you are a political conservative you aren’t necessarily kosher!

  5. Where is de Blasio? Is he too busy with the handsome carriage horses being treated inhumanely to even make a mention of a human being in his city treated inhumanely -notto just once but twice?

  6. We may not like the coverage of the murder in the post, but this country still has freedom of the press. If you don’t like the paper, don’t buy it and tell others not to buy it. What do politicians have to get involved for, especially the mayor? Do you want them to shut down the Post?

  7. To #3:
The point isn’t that we yiden want to read this paper – we aren’t. The point is that others who do read this paper get the impression that, hey, our Jewish landlord does deserve to have something terrible done to him, look how he’s treating us, it’s time for us to do something as well…

  8. #10, they did not violate the law! They violated a people! They violated humanity! They violated a victim and celebrated crime! They didn’t do that by Trayvon! Can you gigure out why!!!
