Baltimore – As Baltimore County cleans up from the wave of storms that hit Friday night, there were more than 110,000 customers without power as of 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, but the county was reporting that areas without water should see relief soon.
Earlier in the day the county’s emergency management office said the 21136 ZIP code area – which includes Reisterstown and stretching as far west as Falls Road – had been experiencing water issues because of outages to pumping stations.
But as of about 5 p.m. Saturday, the county said Baltimore Gas and Electric had restores power to the pumping station, though it was expected to be “several hours” before water was restored to the entire area.
With widespread outages, county officials also alerted residents to concerns about heat. The emergency management office said that after 5:30 p.m., seniors centers in Essex (600 Dorsey Avenue, Essex), Liberty (3525 Resource Drive,Randallstown) and Bykota (611 Central Avenue, Towson) would be serving as cooling centers.
BGE reported as of 5 p.m. that it had restored power to 54,616 customers in Baltimore County that had lost power as a result of the Friday night storms – but still had another 113,569 customers with outages.
Baltimore City still had 91,920 customers without power as of 5 p.m.
Towson remained one of the area’s most severely hit areas. BGE’s online outage map showed large pockets of outages near the city/county line.
“BGE is aggressively restoring service to our customers who lost power as a result of last night’s violent weather,” said Jeannette Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE, in a statement. “As is the case with any major restoration effort, our first focus must be on public safety such as downed wires, followed by critical infrastructure including hospitals and 911 centers.
“Once these issues have been addressed and we’ve completed our initial damage assessment, field assignments will be prioritized in a way that restores service to the greatest number of customers at one time. Consideration will also be given to customers who have been out of service the longest,” she said. “That said, a large number of our customers should expect to be without power for several days.”
Officials said that as a result of the storm, BGE sustained significant damage including downed tree limbs and whole trees on power lines and other electric distribution equipment.
The utility is reminding residents to call 1-877-778-2222 to report downed wires and outages.
