i24 News – The Palestinian Authority agreed to hand over the bullet that killed Shireen Abu Akleh to the United States in order to perform a ballistic analysis, Palestinian attorney general told Al Jazeera, the news network for which Palestinian was reporting at the time of her shooting death.

The Palestinian Authority was assured that no modifications would be made to the bullet that killed Abu Akleh on May 11 during an Israeli raid in the West Bank, and that it would be returned as soon as the assessment was complete, Akram Al-Khatib said.

Statements diverge on whether the bullet will be in Israeli custody, with the Palestinian saying this would never be the case, while an Israeli official cited by the Times of Israel saying that Israel will do a forensic analysis on the bullet.

Investigations by the Palestinian Authority and the United Nations, as well as several journalistic inquiries, found that the shot that killed Abu Akleh was fired by Israeli forces.

But the Israeli army branded the UN’s findings unfounded, insisting it was “not possible” to determine how Abu Akleh was killed.

“The Israel Defense Force (IDF) investigation clearly concludes that Ms. Abu Akleh was not intentionally shot by an IDF soldier and that it is not possible to determine whether she was killed by a Palestinian gunman shooting indiscriminately… or inadvertently by an IDF soldier,” the military said.

The death of the popular reporter in controversial circumstances sparked Palestinian outrage and international condemnation.

  1. 2 Questions: Israel says that the Palestinians have Israeli firearms in their possession, so even if the bullet came from an Israeli weapon, a Palestinian could have shot the bullet.
The other question is: Can they determine with certainty that the bullet they are handing over to the US was the bullet that killed her?
Of course even if an Israeli shot this bullet, the odds are it was unintentional. But that defense doesn’t work for Israel.

  2. If they gave the wrong bullet that is just stupid because it won’t match the residue on the gun.
But now will Israel hand over the correct gun? I wouldn’t because either way the investigators will say it’s a match.
