It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the passing of Mrs. Shoshana Lefkowitz a”h, the matriarch of a noted family of marbitzei Torah and baalei chesed and a paragon of virtue. She was 80 years old.

Mrs. Lefkowitz was born in the Hauts-de-France region in northern France just prior to World War II and survived those tumultuous years by living in and traveling through Switzerland, later making it to American shores.

She ultimately married her illustrious husband, Reb Yisroel Lefkowitz z”l, a talmid of Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, and settled in Boro Park, Brooklyn. Over the next 54 years, they established and raised a beautiful and upstanding mishpacha of bnei and bnos Torah.

Reb Yisroel owned the Palm Gardens, Palm Tree and Palm Beach assisted living facilities in Brooklyn, NY, and utilized his sharp mind and bright intellect to build the institutions into well-recognized facilities. Despite their hatzlacha, Reb Yisroel and Mrs. Lefkowitz were unusually humble and self-effacing. They constantly utilized their largesse for the benefit of Klal Yisroel on all levels.

While her husband was engaged in his many chassodim, Mrs. Lefkowitz threw herself into numerous charitable causes, including Agudas Yisroel of America, bikur cholim, yeshivos such as Yeshiva Bais Moshe of Scranton, where her sons attended, and other mekomos haTorah, as well as yechidim who could use her assistance. She was a towering baalas chesed whose heart was large enough to encompass all Yidden.

She opened her home to the klal and the yochid, hosting events to benefit tzedakos and hosting numerous gedolei Torah throughout the decades.

Reb Yisroel passed away seven years ago.

Mrs. Lefkowitz is survived by her children, Mr. and Mrs. Chezky and Tzippy Paneth; Rav and Mrs. Avrohom and Esther Lefkowitz, rov and rosh kollel of Kollel Bnei Torah of Lakewood; Mr. and Mrs. Avi and Rochel Scherman of Lakewood, NJ; Mr. and Mrs. Shimon and Chani Lefkowitz of Flatbush; and Rabbi and Mrs. Dovid and Sarah Lefkowitz of Baltimore; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The levaya was held today at Shomrei Hadas Chapels in Boro Park, Brooklyn. The aron is now being flown to Eretz Yisroel for kevurah there. The family will be sitting shivah at the Lefkowitz home, located at 1689 48th Street, between 16th and 17th Avenues, in Boro Park, Brooklyn, starting on Tuesday afternoon.

Yehi zichrah boruch.

  1. Please correct one inaccuracy! Shiva will begin at 1689-48 st Tuesday morning after they return from k’vura on Har Hazeisim.

Your description of the couple is done well. Mrs. Lefkowitz a”h did so much and for so many people and always with a smile. Their home was the true בית ועד לחכמים and many communal meetings with lay leaders and great Rabbonim, Admorim and Roshei Yeshiva converging in their home at 1689 to tackle the various challenges that faced the community – be it here in the states or in Israel. One of the great gedolim of yesteryear said of the Mitzva of הכנסת אורחים that it’s not a great feat to host the Ponvizher Rav or Reb Aharon Kotler, it’s a great mitzvah to host the poor and indigent. Borough Park had its fair share of poor and indigent yet all were welcome into the Lefkowitz home with open hands and huge smile. יהי זכרה ברוך
