There are now nearly 40 House Democrats – 38, at last count – who have declared that they will not attend the inauguration on Capitol Hill this week. The number rose sharply after Trump tweeted Saturday that Lewis is “all talk, talk, talk” and should “finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner-cities.”

Lewis, who sees Trump’s Nov. 8 win as illegitimate because of Russia’s alleged interference in the election, is best known for leading civil rights protests in the 1960s, including the 1965 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, in which state troopers brutally attacked the crowd. Lewis will not attend the inauguration, he told NBC News in an interview for Sunday’s “Meet the Press.”

Here’s a list of other lawmakers who will not attend, starting alphabetically with Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., whose spokesman confirmed her decision in an email.

Bass had asked constituents to vote about the inauguration on Twitter:

“I want to hear directly from my constituents! Do you guys think I should attend the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump?”

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va.:

“I just told hundreds of my constituents that I will not be attending the Inauguration Ceremony this coming Friday.”

Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.:

“There is unprecedented concern by my constituents about the many threats posed by a Trump administration seeking to implement the President-elect’s policies on health, environment, nuclear weapons, and immigration, to name but a few.

“I will forgo the inauguration, spending the day instead in my district talking with Oregonians to hear their priorities, try to answer their questions, and prepare for the coming assault on the values and programs we hold dear.

“It is hard to think of a better use of my time on January 20th.”

Rep. Anthony Brown, D-Md.:

“Skipping Inauguration.@RepJohnLewis a civil rights hero. Enormous responsibility to be POTUS.I respect the office, can’t tolerate disrespect”

  1. once again, this report is coming from the washington prust which is the equivalent of fake news. the facts of the above report are either 1) totally untrue or 2) highly exaggerated.

  2. It’s high time all Orthodox Jews unite and outvote the liberal democrats from New York and New Jersey. It’s time for change. Every yeshiva should have every 18 year old registered to vote as a republican. Why are we sitting ducks. The leftist liberals hate yeshivas and vouchers and we idiots elect them year in and year out. If we said enough is enough and began to outvote these opponents from nadler to schummer and stop compromising our Torah values we would have success above and beyond. Same with israel. Why is there a secular mayor of Jerusalem if a third are chareidi. That’s why there is an increase in chillul Shabbos as the secular mayor seeks to bring in secular Jews to Jerusalem by building more entertainment centers open on Shabbos. Wake up sleeping frum giant. Yes we can make Torah Judaism great again.

  3. Big Deal
    Does anybody really care?!?!?
The double standard is nauseating. Both in the Republican primaries and the general election, Donald Trump was repeatedly confronted about his willingnes to accept the election outcome, Not one other candidate was asked this question. Her highness , queen Hillary even went so far as to accuse Trump of traitorous behavior. Yet for the last two months there’s been a steady styream of democats, both elected and unelected that have refused to acknowledge bthe election results.

  4. one of the most important aspects of the united states is the peaceful transfer of power. well, that’s not happening; i feel like we live in some third world country. yovon is gone; poras is gone; bovel is gone. isnt this ‘civilization’ supposed to be the last golus?

  5. These are the same lawmakers that will try to negotiate with their Republican counterparts next week, who will be begging for the president’s ear about some “ultra-important matters” for their constituents, and who will, and do presently, demand respect as publicly elected officials.
Doesn’t the president deserve the same?
