On Tuesday, former Vice President Mike Pence expressed his hope that the Justice Department (DOJ) would not pursue charges against Donald Trump for his actions surrounding the January 6 riots. This comes after Trump revealed that he had been notified about being the target of the agency’s investigation into his attempts to retain power following the 2020 election.
Pence, who testified before the grand jury in this case, spoke to Elizabeth Vargas on NewsNation, describing Trump’s words on January 6 as “reckless” and asserting that the former president remains incorrect in his claims about the 2020 election.
“But with regard to the prospect of an indictment, I hope it doesn’t come to that,” said Pence, who is running against Trump for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. “I’m not convinced that the president acting on the bad advice of a group of crank lawyers that came into the White House in the days before Jan. 6 is actually criminal.”
“And secondly, the truth is that the Department of Justice has lost the confidence of the American people. And there’s so many Americans that are deeply concerned about unequal treatment under the law,” Pence continued.
“I don’t know what the letter today means, the notification means, but my hope is that the judgment about the president’s actions on Jan. 6 would be left to the American people,” the former vice president added.
In a statement posted on Truth Social on Tuesday, Trump revealed that he had been informed that he is a target of an ongoing investigation by the Justice Department. The investigation centers around his attempts to retain power following his defeat in the 2020 election, with the events on January 6 at the Capitol being a focal point.
Receiving a target letter is often an indication that an individual may soon face charges, particularly when prosecutors have gathered significant evidence. The specific charges that Trump could potentially face, should prosecutors decide to proceed, remain unclear.
Throughout the aftermath of the election, Trump pursued a multifaceted strategy to maintain his presidency. This involved exerting pressure on the DOJ and state officials regarding allegations of election fraud. Ultimately, he called upon his supporters to gather in Washington, D.C. on January 6, urging them to march to the Capitol. The subsequent breach of the complex by rioters aimed to disrupt the certification process.
In the weeks following the 2020 election, Trump persistently pressured Vice President Pence to reject the certification of the electoral votes, declaring Joe Biden as the winner. Pence consistently maintained that he lacked the authority to take such action.
