biur-chometzNew York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and John J. Doherty, commissioner of the Department of Sanitation, are once again extending full cooperation to ensure the continuance of a tradition started 45 years ago by Rabbi Edgar Gluck of Community Board 12, Matzav.com has learned.

Rabbi Gluck, together with Alan Dubrow, chairman of Community Board 12, and Wolf Sender, district manager of Community Board 12, met with officials from the New York City Sanitation Department, Fire Department and Police Department, and representatives of community organizations, to devise a plan for the upcoming Pesach cleanup.

Because of regulations regarding Freon gas and floral carbons, before putting out refrigerators, air conditioners or dehumidifiers for collection, call 311 or log on to www.nyc.gov/sanitation to make an appointment to remove the Freon. This appointment should be made a week prior to your regular recycling day. Doors must be removed from refrigerators.

All bulk items were to be put out for collection by yesterday, Thursday, April 14.

Household garbage and recycling will be collected as normally scheduled.

This Monday, April 18, the entire Community Board 12 District will get one collection.  Both household and recycling will be picked up. Note that all items, including recycling, must be placed out for collection by 12 a.m. Monday in order to ensure that all of the garbage is picked up before Pesach. All collections will be completed by noon on Monday, April 18.

All bulk items should be placed at the curb as well.

Fluorescent light bulbs must be wrapped and tied in order to prevent breakage. All mattresses and box springs must be entirely wrapped, preferably in a store-bought bed bug bag or in plastic. If this is not complied with, the Sanitation Department will not take them and can issue a $100 fine.

All chometz burning must be completed by noon, officials tell Matzav.com. The Fire Department will strictly enforce this time and there will be no exceptions. Only 10 pieces of chometz should be used for the burning. The Fire Department will put out any larger fire.

Those in charge of the fires, either in front of a home or shul, should ensure that the fires are small and controlled, so that the Fire Department is not called to respond to an out-of-control fire.

All fires must be supervised by a mature, responsible adult. Do not park cars near or on smoldering embers.

Hatzolah advises that no paint thinners, aerosol cans, lighter fluid or other flammable liquids be used to ignite a fire. These items have caused accidents and are extremely dangerous.

Water, fire extinguishers and/or sand should be readily available at the site of biur chometz fires.
